After the French Revolution of 14 July 1789 -1799

Jews gained emancipation against old prejudices.

Westphalia 1808

Prussia 1812

England 1858

The Jews thought a new day had come.

But this was not the case.

Anti Semitism had not subsided

So began the longing for a separate Jewish state.

Theodor Herzl 1896 wrote

“The Zionist State”

Zionism was at its beginnings a secular philosophy not a religious movement

Many religious Jews opposed Zionism as non religious

Zionism was inspired by European colonialism and saw itself as promoting a Jewish movement for colonialization against barbarism. Except with one difference

Hertzl wrote in his diary June 12 1895

“When we occupy the land…we must appropriate gently the private property on the states assigned to us” and “try to spirit the penniless population across the border”

We recommend a plan “to plant the Jewish people in the land of their forefathers” and

“secured to them by the protection of European power”

(referring to Britain)

Places for this land were considered

Argentina, Uganda, Cyprus, (El-Arish) Northern Sinai along with Palestine.

Many Western Christians saw in the Jews return to Palestine evidence of a sign of the immanent return of Christ.

Christian Zionism

From 1918-1947 under British Rule many Jews immigrated to Palestine speaking of establishing a Jewish state which led to many Arab uprisings

1920, 1921, 1929, 1933, 1936 and 1937-1939

From 1930-1947.Many Jews immigrated to Palestine propelled by the events of the holocaust in Germany.

By mid 1940’s the situation in Palestine was out of control.

A plan arose to divide Palestine into Jewish state and a Palestinian state.

Zionists accepted it,

the Arabs rejected it.

UN proposed a new plan

Temporary trusteeship over an undivided Palestine.

Zionists rejected it

Arabs accepted it

1947 Zionists started to take over town after town

With Arabs fleeing thinking that they would come back later.

May 14 1948 State of Israel proclaimed

750,000 Arabs had fled the fighting

150,000 remained in Israel

Empty Villages were destroyed

Or Jews were housed in vacant houses

Emergency Regulations of the British Admin retained

3 years absent, state can claim the land

1967 in the six day war Israel occupied the West Bank and Gaza, Sinai Peninsula and the Golan Heights.

1979 – 1982 Israel withdrew from Sinai Peninsula.

1994- 2005 Israel disengaged from Gaza

What can you do to help From Kairos Document 4.2.6 “Palestinian civil organizations, as well as international organizations, NGOs and certain religious institutions call on individuals, companies and states to engage in divestment and in an economic and commercial boycott of everything produced by the occupation. We understand this to integrate the logic of peaceful resistance. These advocacy campaigns must be carried out with courage, openly sincerely proclaiming that their object is not revenge but rather to put an end to the existing evil, liberating both the perpetrators and the victims of injustice…”.
