What is informed consent?
Before you decide about being in a research study, you need to know
ILLInet.org • recovercovid.org
The Informed Consent Form
You will need to read the consent form to find out all the information you need to know to decide about being in the study.
The study doctors and other researchers who reached out to you about the study (also called the study team) will give you the consent form and answer any questions you have.

Introduction to the RECOVER study: Researching COVID to enhance recovery
J16
recoverCOVID.org
J17
The RECOVER study is designed to help understand why some people experience long-term effects after having COVID-19 and what can be done to speed recovery and prevent it.
recoverCOVID.org
RECOVER is a research initiative from the National Institutes of Health (NIH).
In Illinois, a group of medical and community organizations are actively designing the study so that we can begin enrolling people who are eligible. We call ourselves ILLInet.
What participants can expectEveryone who joins RECOVER will have some in-person medical exams and complete some questionnaires
J19
* Possible additional tests may be asked of you depending on reported symptoms and test results. A member of the clinical team will discuss such tests if they should arise.
YEAR 1 | YEARS 2-4 |
Exams Attend up to 4 in-person* medical exams (check-ups). Surveys Answer up to 5 health-related questionnaires. | Exams Attend only 1 in-person* medical exam each year. Surveys Answer up to 4 surveys by phone or online each year. |

Protecting participants’ personal information is important
22
RECOVER researchers collect different kinds of data and protecting participants’ personal information is a top priority. We use something called a Limited Data Set that protects your personal information while meeting our research study needs. When the study findings are published, no information that identifies people will ever be used. Participants’ information is kept in a secure database that only very few people can access.
Your contribution is appreciated!
Free rides are available for participants who live within 15 miles of Mile Square health center @ 1220 S Wood St. in Chicago.

Two early learnings and impacts:
Source: NIH RECOVER website, 2022
RECOVER researchers compared the use of an International Classification of Diseases (ICD) code to diagnose Long COVID using patients’ electronic health records (EHR).
Researchers from RECOVER and the National Patient-Centered Clinical Research Network (PCORnet) compared the risk of heart problems after COVID infection and after mRNA COVID vaccination.

As of 9/20/22In Illinois, 698 people have been enrolled so far.

We still need better data.
…cases of misdiagnosis and mistreatment suggest that even the best studies may underestimate long covid’s impact because racism and sexism within the medical system have left some people undiagnosed.
