Caregiver University

Design Team

- New way of engaging caregivers of color within CPSD through services and programming that reflect the hopes and needs of this community.

- The Design Team will meet for 5x 2-hr sessions (Apr. 26-May 28)

Caregiver Advocate

Program

- A support network between caregivers of color within CPSD to increase resource access and advocacy support and skills to champion their students.

- Advocates will attend 8hrs training over 2 weekends in May.

Participants will receive a stipend for their time and valuable expertise

NINA

Caregiver U: new way of engaging caregiver communities of color within Cambridge Public Schools. It will offer opportunities for partnership, belonging and co-creation. Caregiver U will not only provide caregivers with services and programming that reflect the

aspirations and needs of this community, but will demonstrate new ways for the district to work with and for caregivers of color.

The Caregiver Advocate Program is a project designed by caregivers of color to support each other within Cambridge public schools. The goal of the project is to increase resource access, be present and assist caregivers of color when advocating for their students,

and help increase communication between caregivers and CPSD.

The design team for Caregiver Univ will meet from April 26th - May 28th (5 co-design sessions that last 2hrs over the course of 5 weeks). The training to become a Caregiver Advocate will happen during the month of May (total of 8hrs of training over the course of 2 weekends). Our goal is to get a cross-section of caregivers of color that are not typically heard from because of barriers to equity in family engagement. To address some of barriers to equity, Caregivers of color that participate (and are not employees of the district) will receive a stipend for their time and valuable expertise. In addition, there will be interpreter and translation services available. Finally, if providing paperwork to the district is an issue for receiving a stipend, please let us know.

Some other ideas for CFAD from participant comments:

Asian American representation in both academic curriculum (history) as well as cultural activities.
Discussion of gender identity/parenting roles within the Asian community.
A rigorous conversation about where Asian-Americans fit in the current examination of race in America.
Rallying support for specific initiatives, e.g. inclusion of Lunar New Year on the district calendar; suggestion for books featuring strong Asian American characters to be included in school curriculum, etc.
Dismantling the model minority group, building solidarity within AAPI community, building cross-racial solidarity.
