Who We Are
The Allendale Woman's Club is a charitable organization committed to rendering service and helping to make our community a little better.
Over the years the community services we engage in have evolved to include the Departments, Committees and Fundraisers.
In general, Departments are invaluable for the smooth and efficient running of the club.
Committees reach out to the heart of our community to make hands-on and financial contributions.
Our Fundraisers make it possible for us to provide scholarships and financially support groups that are helping to make positive changes in our world.
At the Allendale Woman’s Club we work for the local Community, raise funds to support organizations in need, creating an environment of collaboration and socialization among our valuable members.

Join our sisterhood of philanthropy and fun!
Membership is open to local women 18 years and older.
Feel free to join at one of our regular meetings on the second Wednesday of each month, September through June.
Regular meetings are typically held at 7:30 pm on the second Wednesday of each month from September through June on the second floor of Borough Hall, 500 W. Crescent Avenue, Allendale.
They begin with a fun, informal social gathering at 7:30 pm and at 8:00 pm we get busy discussing the many ways we can make a difference within our community and beyond.
Annual dues are $35 per year and require a minimal amount of time commitment.

Who We Are
The Allendale Woman's Club is a charitable organization committed to rendering service and helping to make our community a little better. Over the years the community services we engage in have evolved to include the Departments, Committees and Fundraisers. As a 501 (c) (3), Organized, Federated, and Incorporated Non-Profit Corporation, the Allendale Woman[s Club is part of the Ramapo District of the New Jersey State Federation of Women’s Clubs www.njsfwc.org and the national General Federation of Women’s Clubs www.gfwc.org. These organizations connect us in service and mission with women around the region, state, and country to make an impact on our community both locally and nationally.

The objectives of this organization will be to render service to the community as a group, to bring together members interested in subjects of general and social importance that may be helpful to one another, and to cooperate fully with the State Membership Department.

The Club History
Did you know there has been a Woman’s Club in Allendale for almost 100 years? On December 13, 1918, the Community Club was founded as a Woman’s Auxiliary to the Allendale Board of Trade. There were 20 members, and they were vital in the creation of Memorial Park as a memorial to the boys who had served in the First World War. They fundraised for the creation of the library and lobbied for street signs and street lights in town.
In 1922, a member of the Ridgewood Club visited and told members about the Federation. So on May 26, 1922, the name was changed to the Woman’s Club of Allendale. They joined the New Jersey State Federation of Women’s Clubs. They continued to work to benefit the community, sponsoring a Girl Scout troop in 1927, and donating chairs to the library in 1928.
The Junior Woman’s Club of Allendale was founded and federated on May 18, 1933 with Margaret Crotchety as the first president. The Junior Woman’s Club was established as a community service organization for women between the ages of 18 and 35, at which point members could “graduate” into the Woman’s Club, if they chose. The group started as a few women who got together to play bridge regularly. There were 26 charter members and the iris was chosen as the club flower (It has been around since the beginning!). This group has been affiliated with the New Jersey State Federation of Women's Clubs since its inception. During the war years from 1941 to 1945, this club worked on war efforts, selling bonds, knitting for soldiers, and assisting the Red Cross. Several of the daughters of the original members went on to become members themselves in the sixties, including Mrs. Thomas Watson, daughter of the first president.
By the 1960’s there were three women’s clubs in Allendale: The Junior Woman’s Club of Allendale, The Allendale Woman’s Club, and the Woman’s Evening Club of Allendale. There was also briefly a Sub-junior Club of Allendale for girls in high school.
Each of these clubs contributed many items of value to the community of Allendale. The Woman’s Club made draperies for the library in 1954 and sponsored a well-baby clinic. In 1960, they donated the funds for a kitchen for the Allendale Borough Hall. The Junior Woman’s Club organized a quilt project illustrating historic sites, which was presented as a gift to the Borough of Allendale on July 4, 1976; it still hangs in the municipal building today. Together, the three clubs raised money to reconstruct the local swimming pool after it was damaged by a flash flood in 1945 and worked on the writing of A History of Allendale in 1964.
Many of the events and projects that we do today come from these previous clubs. For example, as far back as 1964, the Woman’s Club held an annual Geranium Sale, which we still hold today, and donated the proceeds to plant a tree by the ambulance corps building. The Junior Woman’s Club started the annual Bookmark contest, the Busy Book project for the Grade Three class, and Breakfast with Santa. The library activities program, which we still sponsor, initially began as a story hour for children and for a while included puppet shows in which club members would act out the stories on their hands and knees!
In 1989, after 71 years, the Woman’s Club of Allendale was dissolved. Four years later, the Junior Woman’s Club was renamed the Allendale Woman’s Club and the requirement that members leave at age 35 was eliminated. Today, the Allendale Woman’s Club has donated monies to many projects: Building of Crestwood Park playground, purchasing bullet proof vests for the Allendale police, and supporting Boy Scout Eagle projects. In addition, the club reaches out to the wider community and donates to The Center for Food Action, Center for Hope & Safety (formerly Shelter Our Sisters), The Center for Women’s Heart Health at Valley Hospital, Eva’s Village, Oasis, Ramapo-Bergen Animal Refuge, Rebuilding Together, West Bergen Mental Healthcare, and YCS Holley Center.
We are proud to continue both the traditions and goals of the earlier women’s clubs, bringing women together for friendship and community service.

Dear AWC Members,
The Allendale Woman's Club prides itself on providing its members with many opportunities to volunteer while forging new friendships and having fun along the way. This 2022-2023 club year lets us all work together to continue helping others!
We are fortunate that our membership is comprised of ladies who bring diverse talents and a willingness to devote their time and energy to our shared goal of making a difference in our community. It never ceases to amaze us how every call for volunteers is met with enthusiasm in support of our many endeavors. This teamwork allows our ever-growing group of ladies to give back to our community in many valuable ways and we are confident that this year will continue this long tradition.
This past year the club has welcomed many new members and as always, we look forward to hearing your ideas on how to keep the club improving. Please feel free to contact us if you have any activities you would like to put forward for consideration and we'll be happy to put you in touch with the appropriate committee members.
Along with our fellow board members, Carol Lander (VP), Sarina Appelgren (Treasurer), and Susan Karsiotis (Secretary), we thank you for all you do for the town of Allendale and the surrounding areas. We are here whenever you need us! Here's looking forward to a busy and fun-filled club year!
