What are Planetary Gears?

To drive an object, you can use planetary gears. The output speed is slower than the drive's, but the torque is greater. This is because the more gear wheels mesh together, the higher the torque. In a planetary gear system, there are usually three or four planet gears, and the entire system can be locked without locking the other parts. This allows for a smooth gear change. However, planetary gages don't offer any benefits for slow-motion.

The actual planetary gear has the gears rotating around their own axes. The sun gear is used as the input. The gears are separated by the number of teeth in each. The ratio of the planetary gears is equal to -Ns/Np, and the number of teeth in each gear is the rate of rotation.
