Citizens Initiative ExplainedSteps in the Initiative Process

September 20, 2025

36

Sunnyside Park - Town Hall Meeting

  • Citizens draft the proposed ballot measure (the initiative). The draft is finalized after negotiations with the School District are completed.

  • A petition with the final wording of the proposed ballot measure is circulated to collect signatures from registered voters.

  • Signatures are verified by election officials; if enough valid signatures (1,023) it qualifies and becomes a ballot measure at the June 2, 2026 primary election.

  • If the voters pass the ballot measure by a simple majority of registered voters at the election, it becomes law.

37 of 45

Petition Signature Process

September 20, 2025

37

Sunnyside Park - Town Hall Meeting

  • Proponents file a notice with election officials to circulate a petition; publish it a newspaper.

  • Circulators gather signatures from voters registered in Los Osos. Volunteer circulators are needed from clubs, associations, sports leagues and individual citizens to be circulators.

  • Goal is to start gathering signatures in October, and collect needed signatures by January 20 for the June 2 primary election.

38 of 45

Essential Petition Tasks

September 20, 2025

38

Sunnyside Park - Town Hall Meeting
