Dakar, Senegal

  • CCAC supported a cost-benefit analysis of electric buses in Dakar
  • A regional dissemination workshop held in May 2021 to share experiences
  • Government announces it will pilot e-buses in one of the BRT corridors
  • If feasible to expand to other corridors
  • Part of public transport project funded by the World Bank

Dar es Salaam, Tanzania

Nairobi, Kenya

  • Government planning 5 BRT corridors in Nairobi
  • One corridor is already decided to run on e-buses
  • An additional corridor under review for e-buses
  • All corridors to run on EURO VI engine technologies

Upscaling soot-free buses

Considerations for Policy Makers

  • Cities to undertake the E-mobility readiness assessment
  • Cities to either leapfrog to zero emissions technology or follow an incremental approach using other low carbon technologies
  • Cities to develop a fleet strategy to address the barriers that inhibit the uptake of cleaner technologies
  • Cities to incorporate soot-free bus technologies in their mass transport plans while considering available energy options (diesel, biofuels, CNG, electric mobility)
  • Cities will need to incorporate cleaner technology as part of their procurement plans. There is need to set up a climate change strategy on transport
  • Cities will need financial and technical support to carry out the first pilot projects
  • Robust training program dedicated to cities that have initiatives of pilot project
