UCAS Guide for Gap Year Students

2024 Entrywww.ucas.com

2 of 79

Applying to university during your gap year…

  • Read through the whole of this guide carefully so that you know what you need to do. The process is slightly different because you are no longer attending school.
  • You need to complete your UCAS application as an independent applicant who is requesting a reference from our school. This means that we will provide you with your reference ONLY. You will be responsible for sending your application to UCAS directly.
  • Unfortunately, we will not be able to support you with your personal statement and other aspects of your application but hopefully this guide will help you.
  • I will only be able to write and attach a reference to your application if you follow the registration process described in this guidance and use the Buzzword I have supplied.
  • If you need to sit an admissions test as part of your university application, you are welcome to sit them in school with us. To register, please follow the appropriate links on our School website here: https://www.mhchs.org.uk/120/exams-office The deadline for registration is 25th September.
  • If you have any questions re: admissions tests or resit examinations, please contact the MHCHS Exams Team on: exams@mhchs.org.uk

Your UCAS reference…

  • Your reference will focus on when you were a student at MHCHS, and this will be made clear to the universities. It will include the A level grades you achieved last summer and will quote from the reference drafted by your Form Tutor when you were in Year 12/13, it will include statements prepared by your Y12 subject tutors.
  • If you are resitting any examinations; you are independently resitting and are not being taught at MHCHS therefore we are unable to change any predicted grades from what they were when you studied with us.
  • If you are receiving tuition, your tutor can submit their predictions to me in writing by emailing butlera@mhchs.org.uk
  • If not, I will make reference to the grades you were predicted when you were studying with us.
  • If you are planning to resit any exam it is essential that you enter this correctly on the UCAS form.
  • Wishing you the best of luck ☺

If you haven't finished the qualification or had your result, then you choose Pending*.

It's entirely up to you whether you include module information. However, some courses may state in their entry requirements that they'd like to see module results – in which case make sure you include them on the application.

PERSONAL STATEMENT ADVICE

Task:

  1. Watch the video and make note on your Personal Statement doc of the ‘dos and don’t’ advised.

62 of 79

Do

Don’t

- tell the reader about your interest in and suitability for the subject.

- show your Personal Statement to several people for fresh eyes and feedback

- give convincing reasons for why you want to study the course, more than just "enjoying the subject" (this should be a given).

- find out as much as you can about what the course will cover and how it will be taught, and try to make your personal statement relevant to this.

- if you have long term career plans, make a link between these and the course

- try to be concise - make every word count!

- don’t be afraid of details. It's much more compelling to read about 1 or 2 detailed examples than 5 or 6 brief ones.

- don’t mention skills and activities without giving examples of when they have been demonstrated and what you learnt from them.

- don’t refer to experiences that took place before your GCSEs (or equivalent)

- don’t apply for significantly different courses using the same Personal Statement.

- don’t plagiarise from others but you can use a previous statement that you have written

- don’t use cliches or use words you can’t define
