Function of the Stem, leaves, flower, & roots

5 of 23

Root

  • absorb water and minerals from the soil
  • anchor and support the plant

Stem

  • provide support to the plant
  • transports important substances throughout the plant!

Leaf

  • make food! - photosynthesis
  • gaseous exchange
  • transpiration

Flower comes first → turns into a fruit

  • reproduction
  • fruit: store food

Root

  • absorb water and minerals from the soil
  • anchor and support the plant
  • in the case of some plants, the roots acts and storage organs, for example potatoes :)

Stem

  • provide support to the plant
  • carries water and minerals from the roots to all parts of the plant (xylem)
  • carries food from the leaves to all parts of the plant (phloem)
  • xylem contains lignin → support

Leaf

  • carry out photosynthesis
  • carry out gaseous exchange (through the stomata)
  • transpiration

Flower comes first → turns into a fruit

  • reproduction (once the flower is fertilised, it turn into a fruit that contains seeds → seeds will grow into a new plant
