Preparing for the Game: Round 1 ( 1750)

  • Label your paper indicating a compass for directions north, south, east, west.
  • Draw a river running east to west – the river should be no more than 1 inch wide.
  • Draw a wooden bridge that crosses the river with a road (about ¼ inch thick) that runs from north to south and crosses the river at the bridge.
  • Draw a commons area (4x4 inch square)
  • Draw 10 houses, 1 church with an adjoining cemetery, 2 stores, and 1 pub.
  • Draw 50 trees and 1 coal mine (fuel for most villages came from burning trees or coal)

Round 2 (1745)

  • A large house (your home) anywhere you wish. Label your home with a $.
  • Draw the canal the provided profits to build your home. This should be drawn parallel to the river.

Round 3 (1760)

  • Create another commons area (3x3 inch square)
  • Add 10 houses (Total 20)
  • Add another large house and mark it with a $.

Round 4 (1775)

  • Draw a water-powered factory positioned near the river.
  • Add 20 new houses (Total 40)
  • Add 1 church, 1 pub, and 1 store.
  • Add more roads and another bridge crossing the river.

Round 5 (1780)

  • Add 5 factories near the river
  • Add 5 new houses and 5 tenement buildings
  • Add 1 store, 1 pub, 1 church. Make sure these buildings accommodate the growing number of factory workers.
  • Add 1 school for children of wealthy families.
  • Add new roads connecting factories, houses, churches, schools, and canal.

Round 6 (1782)

  • Add 5 pubs
  • Destroy 5 houses and add 5 tenements
  • Add 2 large homes labeled with $.
  • Add 1 factory and 15 houses for factory managers.

Round 7 (1785)

  • Add 10 steam- or coal-powered factories (with smoke). They can be built away from the river for the first time.
  • Add smoke to all existing factories. Owners quickly retool water-powered factories.
  • Add 1 nice house labeled with $.
  • Add 5 more houses for factory managers and 1 tenement.

Round 8 (1815)

  • Add 2 new coal mines
  • Replace one wooden bridge with an iron bridge.
  • Add 5 new houses
  • Add 1 cemetery
  • Add new roads connecting new places.

Round 9 (1827)

  • Add a rail line connecting all of the factories and coal mines in your town.
  • Add 5 more houses
  • Add 2 pubs, 2 tenements, and 1 jail.

Round 10 (1838)

  • Add 20 streetlamps along the streets of your town.
  • Add 2 hospitals and 1 cemetery.

Round 11 (1842)

  • Add another rail line running east to west.
  • Add 5 more houses and 1 tenement for rail workers.
  • Add 1 theater, 1 museum, 2 schools, and 1 large house labeled with $.

Round 12 (1850)

  • Add 1 cemetery, 1 jail, and 1 hospital
  • Add 20 houses, and 5 tenements, and 2 large houses
  • Add 1 church
  • Add 5 Factories, 1 pub, 1 store, 1 school
  • Add 1 special building labeled “City Hall”
