PURPOSE
Why this matters
Stronger scenes and stronger DJ ecosystems can reinforce each other.
Music can inspire dancers the room has more reasons to come back.
The social scene grows more dancers create more energy and trust.
DJing feels sustainable a healthier scene makes the work easier to keep doing.
Think of this as a useful pattern, not a formula.
MYSWINGOPEN.COM
PURPOSE
Bonus, not burden
Community building should feel like contribution, not obligation.
These ideas are optional ways to help.
Growth is not your personal responsibility.
If the scene struggles, that does not mean you are failing.
Help because you want to, and take breaks when you need them.

THE MALAYSIAN DJ COMMUNITY
A community, not a roster
We didn't just schedule DJs. We built a year-round structure around growing them.

People over scores.
Too few responses to trust numbers, so a coach's real experience carries the weight.

FAIR & CONSISTENT
Fair, consistent, written down
The boring systems that keep it fair as the scene grows.
The Handbook
What every night expects, the standards, the etiquette.
20
Fair slots
Auto-release on the 20th; one each first, so everyone gets a fair shot.
Shared finds
We swap event playlists and songs we come across, DJ to DJ. Everyone still builds their own set.
MYSWINGOPEN.COM
Recruit for supportiveness,
not just skill.
“When I can't make it, my DJs ask how they can help, before I even ask.”

MINDSET & FEEDBACK
Show up to local dances
Start with the room you are trying to serve.
1
Attend regularly and build trust, even when you are not DJing.
2
Notice what moves dancers, what clears the floor, and what moves you.
3
Learn the room before trying to shape it.
MYSWINGOPEN.COM
MINDSET & FEEDBACK
Have a growth mindset
The room gives you better data than guessing.
1
Assume there are always new things to learn.
2
Expect mistakes. They still happen to me after 14+ years of DJing.
3
Use socials, events, and new scenes as chances to listen carefully.
MYSWINGOPEN.COM
MINDSET & FEEDBACK
Ask for useful feedback
There is always more to learn from a room.
Ask dancers, organizers, and other DJs for feedback.
Treat each piece of feedback as data, not a pass/fail judgment.
Practice receiving feedback without becoming defensive.

COMMUNITY SUPPORT
How dancers can support DJs
Dancers can help make DJ growth feel safer and more useful.
1
Give feedback in a way DJs can actually hear.
2
Thank your DJs. They are human, and encouragement matters.
3
Make feedback normal, kind, and actionable.

LEARNING BEYOND YOUR SCENE
Expand your library
Serve the whole room, not just your taste.
Don't only collect personal favorites.
Favorite songs often skew Intermediate+.
Newer dancers need clear music too.
Newcomer/Novice contest prep reveals gaps fast.
791
songs added in 2019 — my biggest year
319
songs added in 2025 — lowest non-COVID year
I notice the 2025 gap when I DJ. This year: rebuilding, with mixed results.

LEARNING BEYOND YOUR SCENE
Use contest music strategically
Useful examples, especially in contest-driven scenes.
1
Study
Study songs by level, not just taste.
2
Adapt
Serve dancer experience, not only favorites.
3
Train
Build musical range instead of copying contest playlists.

PRACTICAL NEXT STEPS
Upgrade tools gradually
Tools help when they support habits you already use.
1
Spotify
Fine as a beginning tool.
2
A DJ app
Later, explore a DJ app with streaming integration.
3
Reliable setup
Add a sound card when it helps; move toward a repeatable workflow.
MYSWINGOPEN.COM
