The Power of Your Words- Teacher explanation

Do not show this slide to students.

Have the students decorate a blank piece of with their name. Give them 30 minutes or so, get them to really invest in making it look good.

Then ask them to write on a sheet of paper all the mean things they have ever been called or that someone has said about them. Collect these papers from the kids.

On another day, give them back their name paper and instruct them to crumple a tiny bit of their paper every time you read from the list of insults if someone has said that about them. At the end of the activity, they should have a crumpled paper. Explain to them how they can re-flatten out their paper, but those words did have an affect on the paper. Also, our words affect others and once they’re said they can’t be retracted.

Give each student a piece of paper. Have them write their name largely on it. Have your class pass the papers around the room to anyone. Instruct them to only write a POSITIVE reason on why that person matters to them. If they have nothing nice to say, they can simply pass along that paper to someone else. Teacher should also participate in the writing. Before students pass back paper, ask them to look over the one they have to make sure everything is positive and then hand it to the person�it belongs to.

Optional- take a photo of each student with their favorite reason written on a whiteboard and display in the classroom.
