Decolonization

  • The regions that were once dominated by an imperial foreign power gained independence
  • This unfolded following World War II
  • The Cold War significantly impacted the decolonization process

Why after WWII?

  • Western Europe no longer had the money or the military power to control the colonies.
  • Bi-Polar Cold War World

  • Knowledge of Enlightenment-inspired governments spread to indigenous populations.
  • More people in the western world began to view imperialism as hypocritical especially since they just fought a war against fascism.

What happened?

  • Most regions received independence from late 1940s to the 1970s
  • Sometimes the transitions were peaceful, but most of the time the transitions were bloody.

Today

  • It has been difficult for these regions to succeed
  • There still is tremendous poverty
  • Democracy and civil rights have been hard to adopt
  • Dictatorships are still prevalent

India Gains Independence - 1947

  • Gandhi led campaign for independence against G.B.
  • Riots and violence broke out between Hindus and Muslims
  • British prepared to grant separation with partition:
    • Muslims move to Pakistan
    • Hindus move to India.
  • Millions relocated based upon religious identity.
    • Caused social upheaval.
  • Violence breaks out
    • Gandhi is assassinated by a Hindu extremist (1948).
      • Gandhi favors equal treatment regardless of religion

  • Democracy -
    • India is world’s largest democracy based on British legal systems
    • Industrial and agricultural development have proceeded rapidly
    • High national unity
    • Caste system outlawed to prevent discrimination

BUT,

  • Officially non-aligned in Cold War, but took aid and military support from Russia.

  • Problems facing India
    • India is expected to overtake China as the world’s most populous country;
    • Major social inequality still exists
    • Castes still part of society

Pakistan

  • Ally of the US during the Cold War.
  • Technically democratic, but has a past of military coups.
  • Accused of helping the Taliban and of looking the other way in search for “Bin Laden”.
