Interest: Finding an effective way to share stories to primary students.

Project: Making an audiobook & physical book in Bahasa Indonesia.

Issues: 85% of respondents like Bahasa, but 89% of them find it difficult. They want to learn but only 15% of them have Bahasa books.

Why did I choose to make a storybook?

The project started back on 8-Aug-22 when we all received home tasks to reflect, think, and inquire all about ourselves. What are the matters that inquire about our interests, passions, and hobbies. I have always been interested in games, animation, reading books, and writing stories.

On the 1st meeting with my mentors on the 20-Sep-2022, I discussed with the mentors on how I am interested in quality education. I would like to use technology to help educate the children that are unable to afford school. At first, I was thinking about using games to express my idea. However, I was quite struggling to make it into action and on 4-Oct-2022, I propose to write a Bahasa Indonesia book in physical book and to use technology to insert my voice to turn it into an audiobook with target primary students in year 3 to 4.

I like rabbits very much because it is my Chinese zodiac and because of their characteristics. I started to do research on the web to find out about their habitats and found out about hares, a similar species to rabbits. I choose friendship between rabbit and hare as a topic and start to draft the stories. It took me about 2-months to write the stories and create the digital books using the Book Creator Application. The hard part is the storyline and making the digital illustrations that can help to describe it more interesting.

In parallel, I prepared the pre-survey draft to ensure that my action plan is in the right direction. On 6-Dec-22, the mentors approved the pre-survey. Initially, I have to start preparing the campaign, but time management is very challenging and I learn a lot about organizing tasks.

On 13-Dec-22, I met with Ms. Stefani (4S), Ms. Yuan (3Y), Ms. Andriana (3A), to set an appointment to conduct the pre-survey with their classes and reserved 12 Ipads from the library for the primary students to fill in the pre-survey in google forms.

During the month of Jan-23, more effort is put on the action plan.

The vocabulary is too general, need to revise the sentences

Reflection

I need to learn how to speak with intonation because I speak Indonesian at home all the time but with less intonation. I need to manage my time more efficiently.

After the Christmas Holiday, I put more effort into making the action plan become real action. I revise the storyline and complete the illustration. This is the initial cover page of the book. I remembered I spent quite a lot of time making the rabbit and hare look real and how to make the whole background and color interesting.

During meetings with my mentors, I received feedback from them that the vocabulary I used is still too general and I need to enhance the sentence structure with more descriptive words. How to plot the story from the beginning to the end by including the feedback is hard. And when it is revised, I also need to learn how to speak with intonation, as I need to insert the voice into the audiobook. Though I speak Indonesian at home, it is different with inserting voice into the audiobook because it is less intonation. I need to add more intonation to the audiobook to match with the storyline.

Feb-23: Preparing for the Action Week

Did more research to enrich the vocabulary and finalize the story and illustration of the book

Making campaign slides for 2 days and made the appointment to do my campaign with Year 2&4.

When preparing for the action week, I still haven’t been able to work on the vocabulary. So, I asked for my parents' help and they suggested that I do more research. They explained to me a bigger picture of how I can link my project to the international goal. If I can make the story more interesting by adding things related to Indonesia, there is a possibility that someone can sponsor the production of a printed book and distribute it for free to children in the remote area.

That encouraged me to do more research and I found out there is actually news about hunters who captured endangered Sumatran Striped Rabbit. They are almost extinct due to deforestation. The news inspired me to revise the storyline and make the friendship story become more adventurous in hope that I can introduce new vocabulary such as “membidik, luput, kalang kabut”, and many more. The striped rabbit has a different shape so I need to amend the illustration and it took me several nights.

Finally I got approval from my mentors and embarked on the next step, which is preparing the campaign. I prepared short slides and was so nervous on how the year-2 and year-4 would react to my action plan.

When I went to year 4, the students were less active. I needed to explain more in English so, they could understand the campaign.

I came to Year 2D and 2N first to show the survey results. The students were active in answering my questions and they understood my campaign.

Reflection

Received feedback and exercised my open-mindedness by listening to others and making some adjustments to the story.

Reflection

I was so nervous when Year-5 and Year-6 came to the library and I didn’t manage the time well. This meant that some of them left the room. I have to be more confident with my work and prepare myself well.

Reflection: Majority of audiences like the story but almost half of them don’t learn new vocabulary or do not understand the new vocabulary. I need to make glossary.

The audiobook may work as long as I speak louder during recording. I also need to be better in my pronouncation.

Conclusion

In my pre-survey, most students enjoyed Bahasa and found it difficult to learn and only a few of them have Bahasa books.

I think my action is somehow successful because more than 67% learned new vocabulary from my storytelling. In addition almost half of them learned how to pronounce the words better in Bahasa.

Personal Comment

This PYPx was challenging for me because I had to learn to manage my time. I also learned how to improve my responsibility. The final result was satisfying as most of my audience enjoyed my storytelling and learned more about Bahasa and Indonesia. I learned that I can still improve the book to help more primary students and achieve the quality education goal.
