This note outlines how business can ‘take The JUMP’ and be part of an environmental movement like no other.

‘Six shifts to protect our world, live with joy and meet fantastic people. A grassroots movement offering the community and the tools to help, changing the world as we go.’

This first section offers a quick summary of the JUMP, the second section covers why industry and business can be excited about ‘taking The JUMP’ and how to do so. The final section is an appendix with much more detail on how businesses and their staff can get involved.

2019: Pioneering research by three of the world’s leading institutions that turned the story how we can stop climate change on its head

2021: The JUMP is a direct response to the vital findings of this work, and some of the experts behind the research helped to found The JUMP.

—The Challenge

As our world reaches the edge of ecological collapse, we need a workable alternative to this ‘universal consumer society’ within just a decade.

The science behind The JUMP - undertaken by three world leading institutions - shows we need a two-thirds reduction in the impact of consumption by those living comfortably within just 10 years to avoid catastrophic climate change. And yet, today’s economic, political and technological systems, our cultures and mindsets are almost entirely geared towards producing and consuming ever more ‘stuff’.

Citizens and communities are not powerless, but have a huge part to play.

The science shows that governments and industry do have most responsibility for reducing consumption impact, but citizen action is vital, and citizens are ready. In fact there are six clear shifts that are urgently needed by all those living comfortably...

5 of 25

—The Proposition

This is what the future looks like...

These shifts are clearly recommended by the cutting edge science behind The JUMP, as the urgently needed, high impact changes that citizens and communities have high influence over. They are the global convergence point that everyone must eventually adopt to avoid climate meltdown. With the billion plus people around the world that are comfortably off needing to do so in the next decade.

‘Taking The JUMP’ is to sign up to trying these 6 Shifts for 1, 3 or 6 months.

No more confusion, ‘take The JUMP’ and citizens can be sure they are playing their part. Clear and practical. Radical but doable.

—The Proposition

The JUMP will pilot a lively, positive and visible citizen movement exploring how to live well with less stuff.

We aim to create supportive ‘communities of practice’ made up of citizens ‘taking The JUMP’.

By creating and testing on-the-ground alternatives to a mindset and culture defined by consumerism, we get a glimpse of what the future really looks and feels like, and soon others will begin to follow.

Over time making space for political and non-state actors to follow suit, providing the missing direction and energy for systemic change. This is about societal shift, not just behaviour change.

—The Proposition

History shows that having a positive impact depends on how we approach change. We need the right Foundations

The five JUMP Foundations describe how we approach ‘taking The JUMP’ to make sure our impact is positive. They are based of decades of lessons learnt and are embedded across the movement’s activities and training to nurture a positive, inclusive & resilient approach to change, & an atmosphere of excitement & exploration.

Sometimes life seems designed to make us consume. The JUMP offer support to help us stay engaged and keep going.

Fast fashion, social pressure, cheeseburgers, budget airlines, ENDLESS ADVERTS… To help to counter the ‘drivers of consumption’, and make the transition easier, we've set up the JUMP Toolkit. Each tool is a mini program with different forums, events, discussions, resources, workshops, talks, and much more.

‘A new phone every year? No thanks!’

focus will be on providing quality products that last for years, and can be maintained and upgraded over time.

Quality plant based food on the menu

and bulk buying a thing of the past. and shift to plant based food a cornerstone of 21st century

Tourism will be far more local,

long distance trips rarer and likely longer stays, hugely significant for the tourism industry.

A new T-shirt every week? A thing of the past

With only 3-8 new items of clothing per year, the focus will be reusing, upcycling and recycling clothing.

A car per household will not be the norm.

Alternative modes of transport & reducing the number of private vehicles overall being the main priority `

Staff will expect to be able to keep to the 6 Shifts while at work,

and the best companies attracting the best staff will provide opportunities to keep to them.

Customers will be demanding green energy, green pensions and green banking services.

utilities & services will see huge growth in demand for sustainable alternatives.

What does the science behind The JUMP mean for for consumers, business & industry by 2030?

Service over ownership

‘Why own a car or a drill when I can just rent one when I need it for far cheaper’

These shifts will happen whether we get onboard or not. So why not ‘take The JUMP’ now, get ahead and bring lots of other benefits?

  • Uplift your staff or members - Taking the JUMP offers a way to bring people together to connect and create positivity. As climate anxiety is on the rise with many people feeling powerless, The JUMP can lift people by giving them clear knowledge they’re doing the most impactful thing they can.
  • Get ahead of trends because the 6 shifts are going to happen either way - You’ll be experiencing first hand what the future looks like, what future trends are, so that you can respond to and get ahead of them, rather than have them happen ‘to you’.
  • Shows your organisation is serious on environment - You can be loud and proud that you and your staff are doing what the science says is needed.
  • Multi Stakeholder action is needed - By ‘taking The JUMP’ you’ll be joining local citizens, civil society, institutions and local authorities. It is only by coming together that we can create local ‘examples of the future’ and the critical mass for cultural and systemic shift.
  • It will connect you to global movement of people and organisations ‘taking The JUMP’.
  • It’s easier with The JUMP - We have the tools and the connections to help make these necessary transitions fun and doable.

How to ‘take The JUMP’ as a business

Option 1: Invite your staff to “take The JUMP”

Usually the first step is an informal option to inspire and motivate your staff, inviting those interested to ‘taking The JUMP’ together.

Option 2: Begin the transition as a business

To go further, consider how the organisation can ‘take The JUMP’ more concretely, for instance by looking at operations and services.

12 of 25

OPTION 1: Invite your staff to “take the JUMP”

Usually the first step, an informal option to inspire and activate your staff, inviting those interested to ‘taking The JUMP’ together.

  1. Take The JUMP - Invite staff to try the Shifts and Foundations, decide how long for, hold a kick-off event, set up a forum, start your journey & find out how the future looks.

  • Make The JUMP - Use the JUMP Community Toolkit to make it easier, build momentum and keep inspiring and supporting each other as you go.

  • Land The JUMP - Once done take time together to feel good, reflect on how it went, and keep the momentum building for cultural and mindset change.

OPTION 2: Support the transition as a business

If the ‘staff JUMP’ went well, that will naturally start to change any organisation. A next step could be to consider what the future described by the JUMP means for you as an organisation. Here’s some suggestions on how:

  1. Operations: Adjust your companies internal operations to be as in line with the Shifts as possible. For examples offer green pension options, plant based food at meetings or minimise flying for work trips

  • Activities & services: Is your business activity in line with the future? For instance, can product manufacturers and retailers shift to offering product services and refurbishments.

  • Influence: Can you drive change around you? For instance sharing your own commitment and activity by letting the world know about the great work your organisation and its staff are going to take the JUMP, or convening partners around enabling the 6 shifts.

DETAIL FOR OPTION 1: Invite your staff to “take the JUMP”

STEP A. ‘Take the JUMP’

Invite your staff to try the Shifts and Foundations

While within an organisation we always take the JUMP as citizens, because these are the shifts the science says individuals and communities around the world must make. So taking the JUMP together can be either precipitated by and with direct support of your organisation, or just independently as a group of people who work together, for instance as an organisation, department, office, team, whatever.

  1. Invite folks to hear about the JUMP: email round, hold a lunch chat/talk (JUMP can help with this), put in agenda for next meeting
  2. Hold a JUMP Introduction session to go through the JUMP Shifts, Foundations and plan the JUMP period (plenty of JUMP resources online and JUMP members very happy to present/engage if desired). Inviting key folks in the organisation, people from different departments etc.
  3. Decide what you want to do; For those interested, get together, form a group and decide when you want to start, how long to ‘take the JUMP’ (one, three or six months), and how to stay connected and support each other as a group. If a positive response, decide if you want to all go at same time, or individually, and for how long.
  4. Mark your start date: Have a starting meet-up or event. If helpful, hold a kick-off workshop to go through shifts, foundation and tools, talk about what’s going to be easy or hard etc.

17 of 25

STEP B. ‘Make the JUMP’

Use the JUMP Community Toolkit to make it easier, keep momentum, and have fun

Once you are going there’s a whole range of tools and suggestions which can be used and adapted for the group taking the JUMP. This will help maintain the energy and keep it in people’s minds, and help with some of the inevitable challenges that arise. Check out our site for more info on each.

  1. CONNECT: This is the single most powerful thing we can do to strengthen our JUMP. Hold regular meet-ups, online or (when its safe) in person. Set up a group text-chat online or an email list, or add talking about the JUMP onto your regular meeting agenda. Also it may be possible to connect with other JUMP groups or platforms in your area.
  2. SHARE: Let other in your organisation know you’re doing it, our share with wider community on your org website. This will inspire others.
  3. EXPERIMENT: Host an internal event, get together such as clothes swap, plant based party evening, bike ride whatever you can think of.
  4. LOG & FEEDBACK: Keep track of how everyone is feeling and doing. This is less about whether everyone is keeping to the shifts perfectly, more about if people are finding it easy, are still engaged, what they’re coming up against.
  5. DEEPEN: Hold talks, video sessions, or debates to learn more about why the shifts/foundations are important, how to drive change, or to work with the fact that outer change always results in personal or inner transition too.

DETAIL FOR OPTION 1: Invite your staff to “take the JUMP”

18 of 25

STEP C. ‘Land the JUMP’

Ensure change continues to grow and deepen

Once the JUMP period is over take time to feel good, reflect on how it went, and think about what next:

  1. Finish with a close out party or session. Congratulate yourselves and share it with the world.

  • What next? Will folks carry on with Shifts, try even more?

  • Consider whether the journey brought up anything that you want to implement permanently in the organisation.

  • Consider what was learnt about what made it easy and hard in your area, is there anything you can do as an organisation to bring change in the outside world?

DETAIL FOR OPTION 1: Invite your staff to “take the JUMP”

19 of 25

Consider how your organisation can help unlock the 6 Shifts. You can consider this straight away, or wait until your staff and members have tried the shifts and so are getting a feel for it. This is where impact starts to get big, because as outlined above, collective area based change is needed.

DETAIL FOR OPTION 2: Support the transition as a business

20 of 25

OPERATIONS

The internal day to day functions and goings on that support your organisation. For instance commuting, HR services, offices and workplaces, meetings, work travel, staff compensation, workplace etiquette and ethos etc.

Consider if the day to day operations of your organisation align with the six shifts and if there’s anything you can change. For instance, offer staff green pension options, or arrange carpools to get to work,

ACTIVITIES

& SERVICES

Activities being those external efforts that form the fundamental purpose of your organisation, such as the production of goods and services, campaigning for local change or teaching of students

These could be used help accelerate the vital shift towards sustainable society. Examples have been included per organisation in the following sections.

As an organisation consider are you aligned with the inevitable transition to the 6 shifts? If not, consider how to adapt. For instance if you are a clothing retailer, how can your model shift to clothing services?

INFLUENCE

The capacity to influence things not under your organisations direct control, for instance, engaging partners, education and sharing, convening, sharing your own commitment and activity, funding activities, arranging events and so on.

OPERATIONS: Adjust your companies internal operations to be as in line with the Shifts as possible

This makes it much easier for your staff to take the JUMP, and shows that you are talking the walk. There are many to choose from, and which most important depends on company, so main thing to pick a few you can do and follow through with. However even by trying its a big indication of intent and encouragement for your staff. for instance:

  • Offer green pension options (greening up global finance, Shift 6)
  • Free uniform repairs (reducing clothing, Shift 4)
  • Minimise flying for work trips (Shift 5)
  • Maximise lifetime of work laptops, phones and other equipment (Shift 1)
  • Create office car pools (Shift 2)`
  • Ambassador program (internal training and events informing and encouraging on green shifts, such as the JUMP, all Shifts)
  • Only plant based food provided at meetings (Shift 3)
  • Part time working options (reduces the drivers of consumption, Shift 6)
  • Offer work from home options (minimise need for travel, Shift 2)
  • Locate offices at public transport hubs (minimise car travel, Shift 2)
  • Green rewards/perks: such as extra holiday for avoiding flights, or taking the JUMP :) (All shifts)

ACTIVITIES AND SERVICES: Is your business activity in line with the future?

Where are you now? A strategic conversation for your organisation to have: what is the organisations function, is it fundamentally in line with making the six shifts easier or harder for society? Many will be making it harder, this is often due to legacy felt across the whole economy, and so is not something to be shaming about, just a really to be worked with. this may be a long these markets will be reducing over time. so why not start now.

The opportunity for transition? The question then is can your organisation transition to a model in line with ecological safety? Not always easy in the short term, but given consumer habits are going to have to change, and will in end have to be six shits, it makes sense to get ahead of the curve.

A future where consumerism isn’t the primary focus of humanity does not mean end of business. Far from it. There is huge opportunity for those that are able to adapt to this change, to reduce activities that encourage unsustainable types and volumes of consumption, and instead provide for the vast array of needs of people and society in a sustainable world. People will still need clothing, products, breaks away and good food.

Examples how shifts in activities and services could make it much easier to take the JUMP;

  • Food companies, retailers and restaurants to focus on plant based foods
  • Textiles and clothing producers and retailers, given the need to drastically reduce the volume of new clothing, shift to clothing services or renting, or to higher quality more durable clothing.
  • Pension companies offer sustainable pension options, and banking firms offer sustainable banking services that involve no investment in carbon intensive industry
  • Tourism industry to pivot towards services for local holidays
  • Product manufacturers and retailers shift to product service refurbishing
  • Adopt conscientious advertising that does not drive unnecessary or destructive consumption

Beyond the JUMP there are many further changes a company can make, and a great place to go are the resources at Doughnut Economics.

DETAIL FOR OPTION 2: Support the transition as a business

INFLUENCE: Can you drive change around you?

Depending on your organisation there may be other opportunities to drive change. perhaps you’re already very much inline with the shifts, and . Here's some ideas:

  • Sharing your own commitment and activity - let the world know about the great work your organisation and its staff are going to take the JUMP.

  • Local projects - Engage in local JUMP activities such as car shares, plant based food fairs, etc.

  • Convening partners around the shifts - what organisations, trade bodies and supply chains do you engage with. Are there platforms to discuss supporting the transition to the JUMP and the six shifts.

  • Education - Arrange events, talks or online sessions to communicate about the JUMP.

  • Funding - are there local JUMP groups that could benefit from support?
