You are going to produce a newspaper that highlights the major stories from this unit, Mexican National Era and Empresarios.

You need 14 people on your Newspaper team.

These are the jobs you need to fill.

PUBLISHER

The Publishers job is to build the newspaper from the submissions of the rest of the staff.

The publisher will organize the articles, images and advertisements on each page of the Newspaper. Publishers will also assign stories to writers and topics to Advertising Creators. Create Title and Logo.

The publisher should be skilled at using Google Slides, be creative, be a confident leader, be able to handle pressure, and have intelligent decision making skills.

Illustrator

The Illustrators job is to create or find images for the news articles.

The images must be relevant to the story.

The images must have captions that explain the image and how it relates to the story. Illustrators need to get approval from writers for images and captions before they are submitted to the Publishers.

The illustrator should be artistic so that they can write captions, should have experience researching for images, be dedicated and capable of working independently

Editor

The Editors job is to proofread the articles and ensure they are ready for submission to the publisher.

The Editor must proofread each article and advertisement for mistakes. Looking for spelling, grammar, and punctuation errors. The Editors must also ensure the articles are based in facts and not fake news. Editors must add comments to the articles in Google Docs for needed changes. Editors then must meet with writers to discuss needed changes.

The Editors should be picky, detail oriented, be cooperative workers, have experience with Google Docs, have an eye for catching mistakes.

Writer

The writers job will be to research their assigned story and write up the facts in a way that is easy to understand and follow.

Writers must tell the WHO, WHAT, WHEN, WHERE, WHY, and HOW about their assigned stories. Writers must also meet with illustrators and provide ideas for what images they will need to accompany their article.

Writers should be creative, have research experience, have experience with Google Docs, be able to communicate clearly and accurately.

Advertising Creator

The advertising creators job is to create advertisements that will be included throughout the newspaper.

The advertisements should be as realistic as possible. Prices should be time period and culturally specific. Advertisements should include mock contact information, clear and accurate descriptions, necessary images. Advertising creators must submit their creations to editors for proofreading.

Advertising creators should have experience with graphic design and Google Docs, be intelligent, and creative.

    • Start making your template and be ready for the articles and advertisements
  • A Title for the Newspaper
  • A logo for the Newspaper
  • Front Page with lead story and large image
    • Title and Logo at top of Front Page
  • After front page have two columns per page
  • Title page number and date on each page
  • Be sure to name all of your files with your name and the topic to help others locate them
  • Publishers create a Google Sheet and share it with your team so they can follow the progress and know their job
    • Make a chart that designates jobs for each team member
      • Have a row for who will write each article
      • Who will create each advertisement
      • Who will edit each article and advertisement
      • Have a column to mark tasks completed

  • Minimum 4 paragraphs
    • 1 Introduction
    • 2 & 3 + Tell the story
    • Last paragraph summary
  • Be creative and elaborate to help tell your story
    • Don’t change the facts but feel free to add witnesses and their statements.
    • Get quotes from people involved (can be made up if they make sense and support the facts)
    • Make sure you are telling the WHO, WHAT, WHEN, WHERE, WHY, AND HOW
  • Include applicable information from Learning Goals
  • Dig deeper than just our notes and learning goals
  • Minimum 2 images per article
  • Article title
  • Location and Byline

Advertisement Requirements

  • Create and incorporate images
  • Make advertisements eye catching and appealing
  • Be sure to use reasonable prices related to economics of the time period
  • Find out what currency to use for prices
  • Make your advertisements in Google Slides
  • Discuss with your editor what size it will be (half column, quarter column)
  • Share you advertisement with the editors
