Mission Overview
· The NCLG is a non-profit organization sponsored and funded by various state and national classical associations
whom it represents in its own advocacy and as a legacy member of JNCL-NCLIS, providing a consensus of direction, drawing upon information, talents, and resources from constituent and affiliate organizations.
· It was formed to serve as a forum to identify nationwide needs and as a force for planning and implementing new strategies and programs in Latin and Greek Studies to better serve ALL our nation’s teachers and students with EQUITY AND ENERGY.
· The Committee endeavors to focus public awareness on the study of Latin, Greek, and the Classics through its public advocacy contacts with schools, universities, and governing agencies.
· It focuses on the identification of areas of need and the creation of related classroom and professional resources.
· It responds to crises in the Classics community, including global partners, affecting Classics programs in schools and universities through letters, contacts, and petition signatures.
· The NCLG produces a variety of fliers, maintains a web presence, and communicates with the officers of sponsoring organizations through its open meetings and the monthly Newsletter of the ACL.
History & Organization
· Carter Commission reported American language education was lagging behind global peers
· JNCL and NCLIS were established by several language associations (later merged), as the Joint National Committee for Languages and the National Council for Languages and International Studies: JNCL-NCLIS
· The NCLG was formed ca. 1983, as our Classics community’s voice to JNCL-NCLIS
· NCLG was given a place as a standing committee of the American Classical League, as a non-profit organization
· It was formed through the collaboration of twelve national and regional classical associations
· It received pledges of ongoing financial support & collaboration from these and other state and national associations
· Its purpose was and is to join in the advocacy work of the JNCL as a voice before government, supporting equitable access to quality second language education nationwide, with a specific focus on supporting Latin & Greek Studies
· The NCLG is made up of volunteer officers and committee members from any of its sponsoring organizations and holds open meetings twice a year. Currently, there are 12 members, each liaising in a specific area of interest
Why Donate to NCLG?
· NCLG offers substantial financial support for JNCL to organize meetings with Congress and develop legislation
· Our ADVOCACY CHAIR has been a Legacy Contributing Member on their Board
· We are the sole voice of Latin and Greek and Ancient Studies on the Board and we must work hard to maintain this presence. Many groups compete for a voice on their Board! This requires membership and sponsorship.
· All of our resources are free
· Our cooperation with other language associations and related businesses helps make it possible for JNCL to develop and support legislation for the study of all languages, ancient and modern, to liaise regularly with Congress Members in the development of national language policy, to continue advocating to improve both content (classroom resources, conference panels) and to gain government funding (for language education-related bills, grants, teacher training, international programs and exchanges, Title Acts, etc.)
Federally funded programs like these can fall into jeopardy and must be passed and/or protected and funded!
