Ziko van Dijk, is a German who lives in the Netherlands. He is the co-founder of the Klexikon, a children's encyclopedia in German and he is a Wiki consultant and he currently serves as the secretary of the Wikipedia & Education User Group.

Topic: "Presenting Wikipedia" focuses on delivering detailed information about Wikipedia without the interactive component of a workshop.

Who we are

The mini-course and it’s goals

An adaptation of Wikipuentes, a course by Wikimedia Argentina, the Wikipedia mini-course for university professors was an activity that took place during the event Mais Povos Originários em Teoria da História na Wiki, between July and August 2023.

Encourage the participation of university professors in Wikimedia projects, specifically on Wikipedia, Wikidata and the Wikimedia Commons

​

Reflect on the importance of literacy and digital citizenship in favor of building free and collaborative knowledge for broad audiences on Wikipedia, Wikidata and Wikimedia Commons.

​

Facilitate the use of Wikipedia, Wikidata and Wikimedia Commons as a teaching and learning tool at the university.

​

Drive the creation of specialized content on different areas on Wikipedia, Wikidata and Wikimedia Commons.

​

Mini-course structure

The course had four asynchronous modules available on the Moodle platform.

​

Each module lasted 4 hours and included mandatory activities for participants

​

There were three synchronous meetings throughout the mini-course.

​

It had two university professors that are also wikimedians to provide feedback to the participants.

​

Graduates were offered 3 months of support to implement an activity using Wikimedia projects in their educational contexts.

​

In 2023, there were 45 people enrolled in the mini-course, of whom 18 (40%) participated in at least one of the synchronous activities and/or completed one or more of the module activities. 10 professors (22.22%) successfully completed the program.

STEP 1

In this initial stage of support, we provide assistance and take direct action to ensure the success of the activity. We particularly focus on training the professor, preparing them for future experiences.

1st semester

STEP 2

In the second stage, the objective is to encourage the autonomy of the professor so that they take an active role in managing the activity, facilitating workshops and providing feedback on tasks carried out by students.

2nd semester

STEP 3

In the third stage, the emphasis remains on encouraging the professor’s independence, strengthening the acquired autonomy and encouraging the educator to assume an independent role in conducting and planning long-term activities.

His presentation will focus on the "Role of Wikipedia in Documenting History," with insights and learnings from the Akwa Ibom and Bayelsa History Write-A-Thon project.

AKWA IBOM AND BAYELSA STATES HISTORY WRITE-A-THON PROJECT

Addressing the knowledge and content gaps on Akwa Ibom and Bayelsa State in Wikipedia

Aims of the project

• Address the systematic Bias in Wikipedia
• Recruit and train new editors
• Organize edit-a-thon and write-a-thon to fill the content gap related to Akwa Ibom and Bayelsa States in Nigeria.

Project outcomes

• Created a community of enthusiastic Wikipedians in Akwa Ibom and Bayelsa State
• 90 new editors joined the movement. The target was 80 new editors.
• Over 300 Wikipedia articles were improved and created
• Over 500 uploads on Wikimedia Commons.
• Documented history through creation of content related to the project

Project challenges

• IP Address Block Issues
• Poor record of Akwa Ibom and Bayelsa State reliable sources on the internet.
• High cost of internet also reduced participants contribution levels.

NikosLikomitros is a member of the Wikimedia Community User Group Greece and the CEE Youth Group.

Topic: His presentation will delve into the speaker's experiences and insights from conducting the first physical outreach program at the School of Philosophy, NKUA.university.

​

Facilitator: NikosLikomitros, member of the Wikimedia Community User Group Greece, also CEE Youth Group.

• The following slide is intending to present the experiences from my first outreach program in my university, certainly in the School of Philosophy, NKUA, which had for the first time a physical Wikimedia workshop, despite being the largest university school in Greece with many thousands of students.

​

• Also, we’re going to present how it began, as well the experiences of founding a Wikiclub and the steps, as I have learned from my personal experience, and knowledge exchange with other Wikimedians.

My experiences from my first outreach program in university

How to prepare an outreach program

Preparing an outreach program, even in my case, which involved the French language faculty as a first because a professor is also a Wikimedian, has its challenges. You have to:

• Make a planning how much students you’re gonna have
• Decide the materials for the presentation: You want people who will just edit, or people who are connected with the Movement?
• Negotiate with the professor/authorities when the program is going to take place and where
• Define a plan. How to motivate your students and encourage them to stay, which is a crucial challenge.
• Define the list, together with your partner, of articles to be edited.
• P.S. The process takes time, but it’s very rewarding!

Outcomes

• Almost 20 new articles about French women in Greek.
• Around 25-30 new editors.
• People learned the basics of Wikipedia, how to contribute, which they found a process.
• Editors were mostly women, which is very important.
• 1 person who participated in the program, is now active in my club and helps with the work.

Lessons learned - way of teaching

• Practical expertise to organise, manage and run a Wikimedia outreach event
• Often, young people don’t see Wikimedia as a good hobby because it doesn’t brings money. Connecting Wikimedia with games and the help, but also the Wikimedia values, plays a vital role to motivate your students.
• The future of the movement relies on us. So, giving special emphasis on the movement is significant in order to encourage them and make them future ambassadors.
• Explaining the importance of refining your national language and make knowledge accessible to others. Connecting Wikimedia with OSS.
• Teach them how Wikimedia can change their personal life to the better.
• Technical issues for outreach programs.

Experiences from my steps to found a club

• Before you get the official collaboration with the authority, a good step to drive your club to the next level, as a leader, you must encourage your partners to continue their Wikimedia training.
• You have to promote your club in the group chats of your department. This makes people interested, laying the ground for greater recognisability of your club.
• Conduct online lessons in various times for students. Either small workshops to teach the basic things to your university students, or trainings for the members.
• The need to have 3-4 members at least
• Forging collaborations with other clubs. ECWO for example. That gives opportunities to students of your clubs to work in Wikimedia, and exchange the knowledge you have.
• The most important is to conduct regular trainings. It’s the only way to ensure long-term survival.
• Last but not least: Forge partnership with your school’s authority. They are the most reliable ally. They will provide you the places to do outreach, promotion, official support, and are able to motivate a lot of people to participate. Also, it ensures that your message reaches all the school, and people from various disciplines will follow your club and contribute in outreach.

Hussein Issa: His a Tanzanian and Swahili Wikipedia administrator. He is the Project Lead for Kiwix Tanzania and Organizer of Wiki Loves Earth in Tanzania 2024.
