Our Vision

The teachers, administrators, and staff of The Promise Academy at Martin Luther King High School, in collaboration with parents, guardians, community members and others, are committed to ensuring that all MLK students are respected for who they are and are empowered to grow both academically and personally. We are a student-centered school where everything we do is directly aligned with student success. We absolutely believe in the worth, intelligence, special gifts and dignity of each and every student. We passionately and with a sense of urgency are devoted to constantly creating and maintaining a safe, orderly and secure environment where high levels of teaching and learning occur and where our students understand that they are royal scholars whom we expect to represent the great legacy of Dr. King.

Our mission is to provide all students with the academic, technological, and social skills needed to be productive and contributing citizens in our society.

Supporting Our Students Social & Emotional Needs

  • Starting the first day of school, we will focus on creating a safe, supportive and welcoming school environment.
    • Behavioral Counselor - identity resource inequities, assess school-level needs and include evidence-based interventions.
    • STEP Program: Healing Together Initiative - which provides supports for students suffering the impacts of trauma and loss which includes providing Mental Health Services and supports that includes Individual Therapy, Group Therapy, Family Therapy, & Case Management Services
    • Classroom-based Community Meetings - each day to help teachers build community with students and help students manage difficult emotions and situations, and
    • New Programs - Social Emotional Learning activities and programming
    • Specialized Training - trauma-informed professional development for counselors, School Safety Officers and other staff so they are better able to support the social-emotional needs of our students.

Immunizations

It’s The Rule, Don’t Miss Out On School

  • Keep your child safe by staying up to date on their immunizations.
  • Pennsylvania law requires all students (K-12) be vaccinated while attending school. Students who do not have the required vaccines may be excluded from school until they have received the appropriate vaccines or an exemption form has been submitted to your school nurse.

Before and After School Care and Activities

  • Our school will provide students and families with the following before and after school supports, starting September.
    • Breakfast starts at 7:20AM (First Day of School September 5, 2023)

  • With additional funding support from the School District, we are also exploring expanding our extracurricular and co-curricular activities to include:
    • Drum Line
    • Student Government
    • JRDC
    • JROTC
    • Yearbook
    • Various Sports

New SEPTA Fare Cards Will Replace Weekly Transpasses

What is it?

It is a reusable chipped card used by students to board a SEPTA trolley, bus, or subway. Unlike the disposable weekly Transpass, students will be able to use the SEPTA Student Fare Card for the entire school year.

How much does it cost?

Regular Fare Cards are free to District students. Cards can be upgraded to be used on Regional Rail for an additional fee.

How will my child receive it?

Eligible students will receive their Fare Card on the first day of school (all SEPTA buses, trains trolleys and subways will be free to students on the first day of school).

Attendance

Mandatory All school-age students are required to attendance school who reside in the District.

Definitions for purposes of these guidelines, terms are defined as follows:

Compulsory school age: The period of a student’s life from the time the child's parents/guardians elect to have the child enter school, and which shall be no later than six (6) years of age until the child reaches eighteen (18) years of age. The term does not include a child in preschool or who holds a certificate of graduation from a regularly accredited, licensed, registered, or approved high school.

Truant: Having incurred three (3) or more school days of unexcused absences during the current school year by a student subject to compulsory school attendance.

Habitually truant: Six (6) or more school days of unexcused absences during the current school year by a student subject to compulsory school attendance.

Chronically truant: Ten (10) or more school days of unexcused absences during the current school year by a student subject to compulsory school attendance.

Act 158 Graduation Pathways

Act 158 of 2018 (Act 158), signed into law by Governor Tom Wolf on October 24, 2018, provides alternatives to Pennsylvania's statewide requirement of attaining proficiency on the three end-of-course Keystone Exams (Algebra I, Literature, and Biology) for a student to achieve statewide graduation requirements.

Career and Technical Education

T Office of Career & Technical Education (CTE) offers high quality programs that teach academic and technical skills in preparation for competitive global economies.

CTE provides intensive training and professional instruction through our 3 programs. Students combine technical skills with rigorous academic standards by industry professionals in the disciplines.
