Scouting America has officially launched SAFE Guarding Youth Training, a newly enhanced youth protection program that replaces the long-standing Youth Protection Training (YPT). Effective May 16, 2025, this updated training reflects the organization’s deepened commitment to youth safety, incorporating current best practices, broader awareness topics, and a more proactive approach to safeguarding young people.

Why the Change?

For decades, YPT served as the foundation of Scouting’s efforts to prevent abuse and create safe environments. However, as society evolves and new risks emerge—particularly in digital spaces—Scouting America recognized the need for a more modern, adaptable training. SAFE Guarding Youth Training was developed in collaboration with child safety experts, mental health professionals, and youth advocates to better equip volunteers to handle the complex realities young people face today.

Key Features of SAFE Guarding Youth Training

Annual Requirement: Unlike the former YPT, which was required every two years, SAFE Guarding Youth Training must be completed every year by all registered adult volunteers. This ensures that leaders are regularly refreshed on safety protocols and updates.
Modernized Content: The training includes updated modules on:

Abuse prevention (physical, emotional, and sexual)
Online and social media safety
Mental health awareness and support
Recognizing and responding to grooming behaviors
Creating a culture of accountability and intervention

Flexible Format: The full training takes about 90 minutes to complete, with annual refresher courses available that take only 15–20 minutes. All training is accessible through my.scouting.org.
Transitional Policy: Volunteers who have already completed YPT will remain compliant until their current certification expires. Once it does, they will be required to take the new SAFE Guarding Youth Training to maintain their registration.

What Volunteers Need to Do

All adult volunteers, both new and returning, must complete the SAFE Guarding Youth Training before their next registration or re-chartering. Units should build time into their schedules to ensure every leader is compliant and understands the new content.

Through increased awareness, timely education, and a focus on culture change, this new training ensures that every young person in Scouting can grow and thrive in a secure, supportive environment.

Because of the limited number of spots in the Communication merit badge classes Scouts are asked to have the Public Speaking merit badge prior to registering for the Communication merit badge.

While Public Speaking is not a requirement for Communication, it is believed that Scouts can benefit from taking Public Speaking before Communication. Skills learned in Public Speaking will make Communication easier as well as get more out of the Communication class.

Patrick Henry will visit again this year.��

The 2026 Section Leadership Seminar is an opportunity to connect with Arrowmen from across the section. Enjoy top-notch training, participate in conclave planning workshops, and fellowship with one another! This revised program is perfect for current and upcoming Chapter and Lodge leaders, and is open to everyone, regardless of position. Our members deserve leaders who are trained!

This cost for this event is $30 to all lodge delegates. A cost was necessary this year to accommodate housing, meals, training materials, and an exclusive patch.

Awards and Recognitions are open to any Scouter of Arrohattoc and can be nominated by anyone. The goal is to identify the best and most deserving in each category. Nominations should be presented to the Arrohattoc Advancement and Recognition Team at arrohattocadvance@gmail.com and received by January 16, 2026.

These nominations are for the Year of 2025. Awards will be presented at our District Awards and Recognition Event on March 5th, 2026.
