Assessment and Accountability

Areas to Celebrate

  • Many ways to assess student learning (POLs, Exhibition, MAP Testing, exit tickets, etc.)
  • Data is shared with parents & students regularly in many formats (report cards, SLCs, Canvas) and is easy to access
  • Data dives allow staff to regularly review data and make changes to programs and resource allocation as needed
  • POLs and Exhibition are creative ways for students to showcase what they’ve learned and for teachers to assess student mastery of a subject, while also involving their parents and families in the process

Areas for Focus

  • Continue to find ways to support assessment around MTSS, including creation of a new MTSS Playbook
  • Continue to review student assessments, especially in math, to find ways to address learning gaps so that teachers are able to meet students where they are, while understanding that’s the entry point, and all students need to meet a destination of mastery.

School Culture and Support for Student Personal, Social-Emotional, & Academic Growth

Areas to Celebrate

  • Strong Schoolwide SEL Focus, centered on compassionate communication, with the Habits of Heart & Mind and EKSs seamlessly embedded into everything they do.
  • Students are very independent and autonomous, taking ownership of their education. They are comfortable asking for help, letting staff know when they are struggling, and communicating their preferred learning styles.
  • School culture is open and accepting to students, teachers, and parents/families from all backgrounds and allows them to feel like they can share their authentic selves. There is a diverse student body, and everyone feels welcomed from the moment they walk in the door.
  • Positive school culture trickles down from leadership to teachers/staff to students and their families.
  • Staff have a whole-child approach. Everything they do is student-focused, meeting the child where they’re at.

Areas for Focus

  • Consider increasing the number of clubs, sports, field trips and opportunities for students to spend time together outside the classroom, especially for TK-8 students, to increase their sense of connection.
  • Improve communication between the campuses, staff, and with students/families to make it more streamlined so everyone is getting the same, up-to-date, information.
  • Continue working on MTSS Playbook and standardize tiered supports
  • The beauty/strength of having such an open campus can also be a struggle for staff who are looking to have some down time or a quiet space to do prep away from students.

Celebrate Schoolwide Strengths

  1. Both campuses reflected a high increase of students meeting/exceeding standards in English Language Arts.
  2. Strong commitment, from all educational partners/stakeholders, to the school’s mission and vision of student voice, agency, and success.
  3. This has led to students taking ownership of their learning and advocating for and seeking help when support is needed.
  4. Connect has a whole-child approach and all programs are student centered.
  5. SLOs are integrated and woven into the fabric of everything they do at Connect.
  6. Connect extends learning beyond the textbook and classroom through real world experiences such as internships, college courses/dual enrollment, independent learning, and time management at the high school and connecting learning for TK-8 through equity and inclusion.
  7. Connect staff uses creative strategies to assess and showcase student learning (POLs, Exhibition, MAP testing, exit tickets, etc.)
  8. Staff regularly engages in Data Dives for review. Beneficial next steps would include a specific focus for data analysis to guide decision making.
  9. Strong schoolwide SEL focus, which leads to a school culture that is open, compassionate, and accepting of the school’s vast diversity of learners.
  10. This sense of culture is demonstrated from leadership to teaching and support staff, students, and families.
  11. Strong collaboration and sense of community amongst all stakeholders.

Growth Areas for Continuous Improvement

The self-study identified and work should continue on:

Areas for Focus

Text here (Use key phrases from VC Report)

  1. How can Connect better use data to engage in a continuous improvement cycle to analyze outcomes (particularly in math) and support subgroups including students identified as low-income, Latinx, Black, and those with exceptional needs.
  2. How might Connect develop more complete and consistent Multi-Tier Systems of Support that all staff can refer to and ensure consistent practices to support students at the Tier 1, 2 and 3 levels across academic, behavior/engagement and social-emotional domains?
  3. What changes to curriculum need to occur to support students who are not proficient or showing growth, particularly in math?

As you plan and implement your work, include:

  1. Systematizing their processes
  2. Establish clear and coherent communication between all educational partners, at the site level and between the organization as a whole.
  3. With a strong foundation of SEL support and rapport with students, Connect is primed to move the student achievement needle by setting high expectations for rigor and student engagement.
