What are the elements of ancient theater ?

They consisted of three main elements : the orchestra, the skene, and the audience.

  • ορχεστρα (orchestra) : a large circular or rectangular area at the center part of the theatre, where the play, dance, religious rites, acting used to take place.
  • σκηνη (skene) : a large rectangular building situated behind the orchestra, used as a backstage.

2) The ancient tragedy

The first works were adaptations of religious rituals performed by a single actor.

Then more actors, the music of a choir and the scenery were incorporated. Other genres such as drama and comedy emerged and became very popular, along with tragedy.

The Greek theater was of great influence for the Hellenistic and Roman theater, to later spread throughout the Mediterranean.

4) Oedipus : modern films

Œdipe king (Edipo re) is a Moroccan-Italian film released in 1967 and directed by Pier Paolo Pasolini. It is inspired by the eponymous tragedy by Sophocles (Oedipus King), it sequels Oedipus to Colonus and more generally the myth of Oedipus.

A baby is taken into the desert by a shepherd to be killed. He is finally taken in by the king and queen of Corinth who give him the name Oedipus and raise him as their son. Having become an adult, Oedipus questions the oracle of Delphi about his future : the latter announces to him that he will kill his father and marry his mother. To prevent this from happening, Oedipus leaves for the desert. During his journey, he kills a man, frees the city of Thebes from the threat of the Sphinx and marries Queen Jocasta.
