Ms. Sudkamp’s Class

What is it?

Paper sculpture is an artwork created by shaping or combining different types of papers that needs a great precision. Unlike origami, paper sculptures are made of several pieces of paper instead of one and for once, paper is the subject and everything else are tools.

Calvin Nicholls

cuts and layers paper sculptures of animals that break free from the surrounding matboard and hover just above the surface. To achieve the relief effect, Nicholls first works from a drawing which he uses as a template for the paper components. Each piece can take anywhere from a few weeks up to two years.

Hari & Deepti

Denver, artists Deepti Nair and Harikrishnan Panicker(aka. Hari & Deepti), have created a new body of work titled “Oh, The Places You Will Go!” The artist couple were inspired by recent travels through Moab, Utah and Yellowstone, Wyoming, and transformed elements of their adventures into delicately hand-cut paper sculptures infused with mythology and science fiction. Each piece is lit from behind or below with LED strips and the boxes are exhibited in dark rooms to enhance the effect.
