November Professional Learning

  • Admin & ICs have conducted over 200 classroom walkthrough observations so far this year. This best practice is directly linked to better student achievement outcomes: they promote engaging, student-centered instruction and provide data about classroom instruction that can inform schoolwide policies & practices.

WICOR Walkthroughs

  • Monthly PD Sessions: Sketchnoting, Focused Notetaking, STEM cross-Curricular Writing, Safety & Security Roundtable
  • Learning Walks: Admin have begun conducting learning walks as we prepare to offer this opportunity for all teachers to learn from each other.

Equity & Access

  • Equity and Access is wrapping up a toiletries drive through. Faculty and staff are asked to donate.
  • Equity and Access is also wrapping up our adopt a class winter project. UBASA, CDE, and FBLA are collecting items for pampering and reading to support one 4th and 5th grade class at JIES.

Reflecting on Current Practices and Future Goals

The IB Committee has been working diligently to identify opportunities for attracting and retaining a greater number of JICHS students in our Programme. This work directly supports the charter goals by engaging students with the rigorous coursework and rewards of an IB education.

Some notable action steps identified and begun by IB faculty include:

  • Creation of a “lounge” space for IB students to visit during ILT. This space would serve as a focused space to study, collaborate and tutor. Initially, teachers will rotate rooms for this initiative..
  • Quantifying the current workload assigned by classes. The goal is to clarify work expectations and consider specific time management strategies.
  • Holding subject group specific PD sessions to better incorporate Theory of Knowledge into lesson and unit plans. This would help to address an identified need from the recent IB Self-Study evaluation.
  • Researching implementation of the IB Career-related Programme. A consultation was held on November 28th with an IB Development Manager to learn about the advantages of the CP and the process for school certification.

The Center for Student Learning has been busy! During the month of November, we scheduled 12 appointments utilizing 9 different tutors. Three of our students were so happy with their tutoring sessions, that they have booked recurring appointments. We already have 6 appointments on the books for December. Keep referring your students to us! We have had really great feedback from both tutors and those receiving tutoring. Here is what some of them have had to say:

"She is a great tutor." - Alyssa P., 12th grade

"Got more tutors like that."-John P., 12th grade

"I think we did well! We worked through a listening exercise and broke down the sentences so she was able to understand them better. I gave her some advice that helps me. She was understanding well on her own the time we finished and said she felt more confident." - Kate H. 12th grade

"I assured him when he worked out the problems that he was doing it correctly and I helped apply some of the terms to help him better understand his work." - Elisabeth D., 10th grade
