Problem Statement

Develop an easy-to-use learning platform for educators and learners that helps educators to create and launch learner-centric courses quickly and provide learners an environment of social and active learning.

For educators who are looking for tools, assistance, and on-demand support to achieve their goal of a seamless teaching and mentoring experience, we envision the platform to be a one-stop solution.

For students who are looking to boost their learning experience by connecting to instructors and building a community of fellow enthusiasts, we envision the platform to provide all the necessary means.

Market Analysis - E-learning & Cohorts

E-learning, or electronic learning, refers to a modern education solution used to gain knowledge through digital technologies and devices. It helps in delivering various courses, programs and degrees through online media.

The India e-learning market is primarily driven by the favorable initiatives undertaken by the Government of India to initiate distance education programs to provide easy access to education. It has adopted integrated e-learning solutions in the education system and developed internet infrastructure. With the ongoing spread of coronavirus disease (COVID-19), various e-learning schemes have been introduced for balancing the education sector.

The e-learning market that stood at $247 million in 2016 is now expected to reach $1.96 billion by the end of 2021 with a CAGR of 52%

Indian E-learning market is one of the fastest growing ones in the world

Market Analysis - E-learning & Cohorts

A cohort-based course is simply an online course where a group of students (the cohort) start learning at same time, and progress through the course with a mix of live classes from the teacher, peer-based learning and collaboration, projects and outcomes (like a final exam) and graduation, which is the end of the cohort. After the cohort ends, students become part of the course’s alumni network, much like when you graduate from college. As part of the alumni network, you help out your younger (not in age) peers, as well as learn from them, share opportunities, find avenues to collaborate, and ultimately grow together to achieve your individual and collective goals.

So what has really made CBC a phenomenon in the e-learning industry?

Customer Discovery

Surveys were conducted for 3 user groups – Students, Instructors and Organizations:

  • The survey for students was a quantitative one with anonymous responses to gather requisite data points and determine user pain points
  • The instructors were subject to in-depth interviews to gauge their preferences and issues of any towards online course creation and delivery
  • For organizational level pain points and needs, we reached out to business managers of small and medium scale companies

Find the survey questionnaire for students here and instructors here

15 of 36

Survey Insights - Students

  • We surveyed a total of 28 people across different age brackets, qualification, work experience and industry makeup to study their online learning behaviour and identify their pain points
  • ~90% responded favourably to E-Learning as their preferred mode of learning

Demographic Makeup

16 of 36

E-Learning Behaviour

The large majority uses e-learning platforms as tools for career acceleration followed by in depth learning

Although close to 60% people spend between 5 and 15 hrs per month, the completion rate of courses above 60% is a paltry 28%

The prime reason for this low completion rate has been an inability to connect with instructors/peers in self-paced courses coupled with dwindling motivation and distractions

MOOCs came out to be the preferred mode of learning while cohort based platforms found few users

Survey Insights - Students

17 of 36

Cohort Based Platforms

More than 90% people are open to idea of cohort based courses though for interactive group based learning

People are willing to pay for cohort based courses for a better standard of learning

The propensity to pay is also good with more than 50% of people willing to spend more than 5000 rupees at a chance to upskill

The vast majority is unaware about cohort based platforms and even if aware the adoption rate has been low

Survey Insights - Students

Major Pain Points - Students

Pain Points

Solutions

  • E-Learning platforms don't provide interactive learning
  • Build a cohort community for peer to peer and instructor-peer interaction
  • Lack of real-time learning
  • Facilitate real time learning using VC tools for live classes
  • Self paced courses are boring and unidimensional (lack of sounding board for ideas)
  • A community of peers and moderators to exchange ideas and solve problems if any
  • Not just academic tutors but access to industry SMEs/experts is low
  • Enabling students to meet and learn from a wide gamut of experts on the platform
  • Inadequate provisions for concept clarifications and doubt clearing
  • A dedicated section based on each cohort to solve doubts by instructors and moderators
  • Course completion rate is low due to lack of incentive to complete it in time (Course isn't time bound)
  • Deadline based course structure with access restrictions which are time bound
  • Working/Learning in silos isn't enriching or rewarding
  • Enable group based learning for each cohort
  • Lack of support beyond course completion
  • Lifetime support for each cohort participant based on successful course completion
  • Unable to connect with other participants for peer learning
  • Provide space for social tools to foster community building for each cohort

VII

On the basis of the insights collected from our survey, we were able to collect the major pain points students are facing with structured learning. We were also able to understand their expectations and come up with potential solutions for the pain points

19 of 36

The instructors were subject to in-depth interviews to gauge their preferences towards online course creation and delivery

Motivations

  • Giving back to others/satisfaction of teaching
  • To make a living
  • Developing a Personal brand

Mode of Creation

  • Using multiple tools and integrating them manually
  • Using MOOCs

Desired Outcome

  • Generation of maximum sales
  • Opportunity to cross sell other courses

Preferred mode of delivery

  • Majority of instructors would be most comfortable with taking 1-2 hr sessions that are live over pre recorded content
  • More than 50% of instructors are willing to adopt a cohort-based approach if given the right service

Revenue Sharing

  • Instructors are willing to adopt a %age-based revenue sharing model with the cohort platform

Survey Insights - Instructors

20 of 36

Pain Points

Solutions

  • Demand generation is a tedious and time- consuming task
  • Cohort based platform bridges the gap between students and instructors thus eliminating the need to invest time in finding students for courses
  • Collecting content and making a flow. Testing and feedback takes time
  • Provision of plug and play course creation tools so that the instructor has to focus on only content creation
  • Lack of technical assistance from the platform
  • Availability of tools and technical experts to assist in creating courses
  • Build and managing websites/community is highly technical and time taking
  • In-House creation of websites using platform and integrated third party tools
  • RoI across courses is not good
  • A subscription-based or revenue-sharing based revenue structure

Instructors

Organizations

  • No dedicated IT team to host dedicated Learning Management Systems and create courses
  • In-House creation of websites using platform and integrated third party tools || Provision of plug and play course creation tools
  • LMS system subscriptions from MOOCs are expensive
  • A lower subscription fee based on company needs with only required features

‘Co-learn’ - Feature Prioritization for MVP

VII

On the basis of the user research, we were able to prioritize the problems we need to solve. We used the impact vs effort exercise to understand what we need to solve first and how.

To start off with the cohort based learning and to address the pain points of lack of interaction, engagement and expert’s time, we proposed to launch the absolute lean version of ‘Co-Learn’ by using as many third party tools as possible. We believe that this model would help us establish the quality of the courses and the community.

In terms of product, we have identified the following features to be part of MVP -

  1. Cohort based learning -
    1. Live classes with mentors - To tackle the drop-off rate, we want the content to be exclusive and engaging with live content and QnA. The content would be delivered via ‘Zoom’.
    2. Content Management - To manage the session notes, Assignments, we have decided to choose ‘Slack’. The content for mentors would be curated with the help of designers, and content creators.
    3. Community Management - we have decided to recruit community managers who would manage participants’ subscriptions, access to channels and invitations to sessions.

  • Courses Marketplace (Website)
    1. Explore courses (with filters and tags)
    2. Course details
    3. Course structure
    4. Course preview
    5. Instructor details
    6. Payments

(Rationale : Course marketplace is the first place learners and new instructors visit in order to know more about the courses and instructors. Therefore, we want this feature to be a part of the MVP)
