Genesis 19

God will destroy sinful cities of Sodom and Gomorrah. God hates sin.

God is also merciful. God shows favor to Lot and family. We must follow God’s words.

When we look back- wanting old ways- we disobey God. Lot’s wife will discover the wrath of God.

Luke 17:28-30

It was the same in the days of Lot. People were eating and drinking. They were buying and selling. They were planting and building. But on the day Lot left Sodom, fire and sulfur rained down from heaven. And all the people were destroyed.

 “It will be just like that on the day the Son of Man is shown to the world.

Abraham’s nephew Lot lived in Sodom. The people there were wicked. Two men with the Lord at Abraham’s tent were angels. Angels sent by God to destroy the wicked cities.

The two angels looked like men. They went to Sodom. Lot, his wife, and two daughters lived there. Lot was sitting by the city gate.

Lot bowed to the strangers. Lot insisted the men stay at his house.

Lot prepared bread without yeast and gave them a meal.

News of the visitors spread through the city. Men of all ages surround Lot’s house. Mob of men demanded the visitors be given to them. Evil men want sex with the angels.

Lot went outside. Closing door behind him. Lot shouted, “Don’t do this wicked thing. The men are my guests.”

The mob replied, “ You foreigner living in our city. Do not play the judge. We will treat you worse than the visitors.”

Mob surged forward. Tried breaking door down. Angels pulled Lot inside. Angels struck mob with blindness. Mob could not find the door.

Before Lot and his guests had gone to bed, all the men came from every part of the city of Sodom. Young and old men alike surrounded the house. 5They called out to Lot. They said, “Where are the men who came to you tonight? Bring them out to us. We want to have sex with them.” Genesis 19: 4-5

But the angels inside reached out and pulled Lot back into the house and shut the door. Then they made the men who were at the door of the house blind. They blinded both young and old men so that they couldn’t find the door.

The angels told Lot get his family. Wickedness is so great- God is going to destroy Sodom and Gomorrah.

Lot went to find the men pledged to his daughters. Lot told them to hurry and get out of the city. The men did not believe. The men would not leave.

As the sun was coming up the angels told Lot and family to get out. “Hurry or be swept away when the city is destroyed.” Angels grabbed their hands and led them out.

Angels said, “Flee for your lives. Don’t look back. Go to the mountains. Do not stop.”

The Lord had mercy on Lot and his family.

Lot reached safety. Then Lord sent down burning Sulphur like rain. Sodom and Gomorrah destroyed. All the people destroyed.

Lot’s wife not listen. She looked back. She became a pillar of salt.

The Lord spared Lot and his two daughters. They now sheltered in town of Zoar.

Next morning, Abraham looked down at Sodom and Gomorrah. Thick smoke like a furnace rose. God destroyed the wicked. God spared Lot.

Then Lot went out and spoke to his sons-in-law. They had promised to marry his daughters. He said, “Hurry up! Get out of this place! The Lord is about to destroy the city!” But his sons-in-law thought he was joking.

Genesis 19: 14

Lot didn’t move right away. So the men grabbed him by the hand. They also took hold of the hands of his wife and two daughters. They led all of them safely out of the city. Genesis 19: 16

But Lot’s wife looked back. When she did, she became a pillar made out of salt. Genesis 19: 26

 God judged the cities of Sodom and Gomorrah. He burned them to ashes. He made them an example of what is going to happen to ungodly people.  God saved Lot, a man who did what was right. Lot was shocked by the evil conduct of people who didn’t obey God’s laws.

2 Peter 2:6-7

Abraham had pleaded with God. For the sake of 10 believers, God would not destroy the city. Abraham saw there were not even 10. The city was destroyed. God hates sin. The people were eternally separated from God. Let this be a warning to all. Sin separates us from God. God shows mercy. Gives us salvation in Jesus.
