Our research is based upon about 4,200 responses to a survey of ACCA members, affiliates and students, that was conducted in November 2019 together with several interviews with finance leaders from a range of countries.

To start our survey we asked two key questions of the respondents. Do you consider that you have relevant digital skills and are those the skills that are right for the role that you perform.

85% of the respondents considered that they had relevant digital skills. Our analysis of the results showed some variation in the response by country but not significantly by age. Although it might well be worth commenting that this perception may change according to age. Whilst we see a slight variation between the age ranges of the respondents their perceptions of what might constitute relevant skills may well differ.
63% of respondents said that they had the right level of skills. The responses to this question showed a greater range of variation by geography and age. In Russia, for example, 77% of respondents felt that they had the right level of skills, whereas in Malaysia and Singapore the numbers were 53%. Clearly different economies invest in digitalisation at different rates. This again will impact our perception of our digital skills. Those respondents aged over 55 were also less comfortable that they had the right level of skills – again 53%.
