parent/student handbook

WHAT IT’S MEANT TO DO:

To help us reach these goals, this handbook is designed to assist both students and parents by providing information about the policies, procedures, and regulations of our school.

All students are expected to abide by the expectations set forth in this handbook whether they are receiving instruction on campus or online.

WHY WE HAVE A HANDBOOK:

Because we believe the educational excellence of our school is the result of the efforts put forth by our entire school community, we desire to foster: high standards of academic achievement, productive & caring students, and school pride.

This handbook is available on our website and it is included in the weekly newsletter every week as well.

ABSENCES

The Policy:

Chronic Absenteeism - is typically defined as missing 10 percent or more of a school year or approximately 18 days a year, or just two days every month. This includes excused absences.

How to clear an absence

Absences must be excused by a phone call from the parent (or a written note from the doctor’s office for illness) upon the student’s return from the absence or the absence will be marked as a truancy within 10 days of the absence. Students who fail to clear their absences may not be allowed to make-up work that was missed due to the absence.

Parents will receive a phone call via the Attendance Office and/or the automated calling system, when their child is absent, if absence is unverified after 10 days, it will be recorded as “Truant.”

Attendance Office phone numbers to report absences: 562) 210-3000, ext. 515108, 515109, or 515110 (7:00 AM-4:00 PM) OR (562) 921-8523 (Voice message only)

The Consequences:

Disciplinary actions will be taken for truancies

Students who are truant will be placed on an attendance contract. Administration will set up a conference with student and parent if necessary and begin the School Attendance Review (SART/SARB) process.

Students who have four (4) or more verified incidents of truancy during the previous grading quarter may not be eligible to participate in any co-curricular and/or extracurricular activities.

Any student who is 18 years of age and abuses their senior privileges may have them suspended or revoked.

TARDIES

If you are not in your seat when the bell rings- You are TARDY.

We expect all students to be on time to class and ready to begin the learning process when the time for class begins.

*A student missing from a single period more than 30 minutes is considered absent and truant unless the absence is cleared with a phone call from the parent with a valid excuse and/or a doctor’s note.
