Utilizamos el REPORTED SPEECH, o estilo indirecto en español, cuando queremos referirnos a lo que ha dicho alguien más y contarlo con nuestras propias palabras.

He said (that) we would go to the party
I. REPORTED SPEECH: PRESENT→PAST
Para utilizar PRESENT, cambiamos la oración a REPORTED SPEECH utilizando SIMPLE PAST o TO BE PAST según corresponda.
SIMPLE PRESENT → SIMPLE PAST
TO BE PRESENT → TO BE PAST
“I play soccer” → He said (that) he played soccer
“I don’t play soccer” → He said (that) he didn’t play soccer
“Do you play soccer?” → He asked if I played soccer
“She is tired” → He said (that) she was tired
“She isn’t tired” → He said (that) she wasn’t tired
“Are you tired?” → He asked if I was tired

Para utilizar PAST cambiamos la oración a REPORTED SPEECH utilizando PAST PERFECT.

“I didn’t play soccer” → He said (that) he hadn’t played soccer
“Did you play soccer?” → He asked if I had played soccer
“She was tired” → He said (that) she had been tired
“She wasn’t tired” → He said (that) she hadn’t been tired
“Were you tired?” → He asked if I had been tired

Para utilizar PRESENT CONTINUOUS, cambiamos la oración a REPORTED SPEECH utilizando PAST CONTINUOUS.

“I am not playing soccer” → He said (that) he wasn’t playing soccer
