Assignments

  • Not all assignments are graded or put in Powerschool.
    • Extra Practice assignments like some activities on Quia, Blooket, Gimkit or some articles to practice annotation or some Google Forms are not graded and put in Powerschool.
      • However, that doesn’t mean they are not important or should be viewed as optional assignments.
  • All practice assignments allow you to practice skills that will be assessed on a unit summative assessment.
  • Think of it like this:
    • If you don’t go to all or most of your football practices, how will you perform in your game?
        • Probably not well at all.
    • If you don’t practice your instrument often or you choose to practice whenever you feel like, how do you think you will perform in a concert?
        • Probably not well at all.

*No notes. Just go over..

Grading

Grading Policy: Grade information will be available to students and parents through the PowerSchool portal:

  1. Formative Assessments (Ex. class work, skill practice, skill application, homework) about 10-20% of your grade (depending on the unit)
  2. Summative Assessments (Ex. tests, quizzes, class work that assesses skill(s) and projects) 80-90% of your grade (depending on the unit)

  • If you do not understand an assignment, come see Mrs. Whelpley in person during class, Bulldog Block, email Mrs. Whelpley or contact another student in the class.

14 of 24

Grading (Continued)

  • Students who do not consistently do the skill practice are unprepared for class and will find difficulties keeping up with the next day's activities and/or future assessments.
  • All students are expected to complete all classwork and homework (skill practice/application) on time.
  • Students that do not complete homework or skill practice, will not be prepared for the summative assessment.

*No notes. Just go over.

15 of 24

Grading (Continued)

  • Formative assessments (practice assignments) tell both the student and the teacher where that student is in terms of full understanding and application of the skill. That is why students MUST complete all skill practice/application assignments (Formative Assessments) even if it is late or you are absent.
    • AGAIN, NOT ALL FORMATIVES WILL BE GRADED.
  • Summative assessments provide evidence that the student has mastered the content and skills.
  • Students that do not complete skill practice, will not be prepared for the summative assessment.
  • With few exceptions (ex. some writing assignments or projects), summative work is normally completed in the classroom.

*No notes. Just go over.

Absences (Part 3)

  • If absent the day an assignment is due, there will be a letter “M” (Missing) next to the assignment in Powerschool.
  • Board policy allows students to have one extra day to hand in assignments for each day they are absent.
  • If absent work is not handed in after that time, the assignment becomes LATE and an “L” will be added to Powerschool along with a grade of zero until the assignment is made up.
  • You MUST notify Mrs. Whelpley by email when any late/missing assignment is finished or your grade may not be updated.
