What is a Natural Disaster?

Natural disasters are caused by nature.

Natural disasters can sometimes be predicted, but other times they can occur without warning.

Natural disasters can cause damage to people’s homes, shut off the electricity, water, and phones, and can sometimes hurt people.

Emergency

An emergency is a life-threatening event that requires immediate action. The occurance of a natural disaster can cause a widespread state of emergency. It is important for people to be prepared in case of emergencies by having emergency plans, emergency preparedness kits, and an emergency shelter.

Volcanic Eruptions

  • A volcanic eruption is when pressure is built up inside a volcano and it releases lava and gas, sometimes explosively.
  • In the U.S. most volcanoes are found in Alaska, Hawaii, and the Pacific Northwest.

Earthquakes

  • An earthquake is a sudden and violent shaking of the ground, sometimes causing great destruction, as a result of movements within the earth's crust or volcanic action.
  • In the U.S. most earthquakes occur near the west coast and on fault lines.

Tsunamis

  • Tsunamis are a long high sea wave caused by an earthquake, submarine landslide, or other disturbance.
  • In the U.S. the majority of tsunamis occur in Alaska, Hawaii, and the west coast.

Floods

  • Floods are an overflowing of a large amount of water beyond its normal confines, especially over what is normally dry land.
  • Floods in the U.S. mostly occur on the eastern coast and near bodies of water.
  • Hurricanes and Tsunamis can also cause flooding.
