Motivation – Effects of Poor Sanitation

  • 829,000 people die/year due to poor water, sanitation and hygiene (WHO, 2019)
    • Accounts for 60% of all diarrheal deaths
  • Aids the spread of Neglected tropical diseases (NTDs)
    • Includes cholera & dysentery (WHO, 2019)
  • Leads to productivity losses at work
    • Estimated $324m (USD) in Kenya and $177m (USD) in Uganda (Water and Sanitation Program, 2012)
  • The FINISH Initiative in Kenya an Uganda aim to increase access to improved sanitation

Objectives

  1. Estimate the impact of the FINISH model on health, economic, and social outcomes
  2. Explore the perspectives, attitudes and practices of various stakeholders (communities, governments, entrepreneurs, and financiers) towards the FINISH model
  3. To determine cost effectiveness of the FINISH model

Materials and methods_2

  • Data collection: Baseline, mid-term and end-term at the end of 5 years of implementation
  • Ethical consideration: Protocol submitted to both IRBs in Kenya and Uganda
  • Informed consent will be obtained from all participants

Outcome measure

  • Deaths due to diarrhoea among children under age 5
  • Gender equality index
  • Local governments that adopt FINISH Mondial standards of toilet designs
  • Households with functional handwashing facilities (presence of both water and soap and evidence of utilization)
  • Households with handwashing facilities
  • Households using safely managed sanitation systems
  • Households that constructed/refurbished/upgraded a toilets
  • Households seeking sanitation-related loans who obtained the expected support
