About the Maps
When I was making my map of Rivercrest City, I decided that the harbor district needed some boats in the water, so I made the maps shown here. I had to break my rule about using only built-in PowerPoint shapes in order to get the shape of a hull; the hulls used here are a manually-drawn shape.
The Salty Cog
The Salty Cog is a small, shallow-draft cargo ship that can safely navigate inland waterways as well as coastal shorelines. She’s propelled by a single sail, and optionally by two large oars. The ship is manned by a crew of 4 plus a captain. The ship is small enough that – once she’s rigged in fair weather – a crew of just 2 can handle her. When underway the crew works in shifts, but when the weather turns she wisely seeks safe harbor.
The very cramped crew’s quarter is in the bow, under the forecastle. With a ceiling height of just 5’6”, taller crewmembers must duck when inside. Halfling and gnome crew members find the quarters comfortable enough.
Beneath the quarterdeck there is a galley, the captain’s cabin, and an (often empty) passenger cabin. Here the ceiling is a more comfortable 6’6”. Currently the captain is Orin Riverstride, a level 3 Rogue who fancies himself a swashbuckler.
The lowest level of the ship is the cargo hold. On any given run the Salty Cog might be carrying grains, fruits, vegetables, ales, wines, spirits, oils, textiles, garments, tools, pottery, glassworks, metalworks, or woodworked items. The Salty Cog tends to make longer distance runs from Rivercrest City, out to the sea, and then up or down the coast.

The Rivercrest Queen
The Rivercrest Queen is a 75’ patrol vessel whose mission is to prevent skullduggery all along the navigable lengths of the river. She’s paid for by the nobles of Rivercrest City to ensure that commerce to and from the city remains uninterrupted.
The Queen is propelled by a single sail or by oars when necessary. She has a shallow draft that makes her suitable only for riverine or coastal work, but in reality she rarely sees saltwater. Her patrol route takes her up and down the river only.
At 75’ she’s one of the largest ships to call the river home. She’s narrow for her length and is fast enough to eventually catch most ships that she might pursue.
The Rivercrest Queen is crewed by 10 sailors, 2 ensigns, and a captain. Her current captain is Thalira Moonshadow, a female Half-Elf, level 5 Fighter. The ship patrols 24x7 in all seasons, the crew working in six 4-hour shifts, with a minimum of three crew members on duty at all times.
