Costa Mesa Sanitary District used AI to save $100,000 per year
Inspect Manhole Covers 60% faster
CMSD employees are not subjecting themselves to potential life-threatening injuries by being struck from fast-moving vehicles when they were in the street manually inspecting manhole covers. Another benefit is the ability of transferring nearly 700 work hours employees were spending a year manually inspecting manhole covers to other operational areas such as spending more time cleaning the sewer system and/or performing closed-circuit televising of pipeline to evaluate the current condition of the asset.

FALSE INFORMATION
In areas of new content, ChatGPT is a convincing BS-er!
“Hallucinating”
At first, incredible!
We’re so smart! We’ve saved hundreds of hours of research! AI saves the day…

And finally…
Yeah, no kidding!

BIG ETHICAL QUESTIONS
Large language models and other generative API have basically vacuumed up the entire internet.

Fraud used to be obvious thanks to terrible grammar.
“Help me rewrite this email to sound like these blog posts written by Mac Clemmens.”
“Personalize the message based on information in Dave’s biography on the website”
This might be far more difficult to spot!
Dave has to think even more critically.
Hey Dave,
Given your exceptional attention to detail, which has always been evident in ensuring our clients' websites look impeccable, I wanted to reach out. With your 15 years of experience, I know you understand the importance of both aesthetic appeal and user-friendliness.
I'm thinking of rewarding our staff with surprise gifts as a token of appreciation and motivation. I trust you'll keep this information under wraps. I'd like this to remain between us until the gifts are handed out. Could you help with the purchase soon? Knowing your keen eye for detail, do you have any recommendations for local stores to buy these gift cards? I'm considering options like Amex, eBay, or Amazon.
When you're not busy tinkering in your shop or off-roading in your Jeep, I'd love to get your feedback. Looking forward to your insights before we move forward with this idea.
Best regards,
Mac Clemmens
“Everything city workers search for and create within ChatGPT is subject to the California Public Records Act, city officials warn multiple times throughout the newly released 23-page document, meaning that any citizen can get a look at how San Jose employees are using the new AI program.”
On Sunday, a report from the South China Morning Post revealed a significant financial loss suffered by a multinational company's Hong Kong office, amounting to HK$200 million (US$25.6 million), due to a sophisticated scam involving deepfake technology.
The scam featured a digitally recreated version of the company's chief financial officer, along with other employees, who appeared in a video conference call instructing an employee to transfer funds.
Not anytime soon!
District economics favor employment stability
No competitive forces like the private sector that would jumpstart a substitution, like the outsourcing craze in the 2000s and the side-effects (e.g. Boeing)
Technology is too new and unreliable
Think: autopilots on planes, self-driving cars. Oversight, ethics, policy, and compliance. People don’t trust AI. And people want to trust and understand their government.
Generative AI is going to have a reckoning
Currently allowed to vacuum up entire internet. But soon, original authors will want their content royalties and/or the right to block their content from being assimilated into data sets.
SO, WILL AI TAKE MY JOB?
AND WE HOPE FOR A BRIGHT FUTURE
THE FUTURE: “SUPERVISED” AI
Trusted district source training data (e.g. SDLF)
Used only as a tool — to draft, assist, review, but not replace humans
Specific applications are tested on districts first
Where humans do not abdicated their responsibilities and continue to serve each other.
