The Tabernacle

Purpose:

  1. A sign of God’s presence among His people
    • “Then have them make a sanctuary for me, and I will dwell among them” (Exodus 25:8)

  • A testimony of God’s Power and Glory

  • Evidence of God’s leadership to His people

The Tabernacle Cont.

Significance:

  • God, Himself, gave the design to Moses
  • The only worship place for all the Jews
  • Located in the center of the camp
  • Was a symbol of Jesus among his people
  • All the components of the tabernacle attest to Jesus and His church

  • Mentioned in detail in 20 chapters!
    • Found in 3 books of The OT - Exodus. Leviticus, and Numbers
    • Referenced in 2 chapters of The NT - Hebrews 8 and 9
    • Total 20 + 2 = 22 chapters in The Bible

  • God showed Moses the design on The Mountain
  • It was built by generous donations from the people
    • “everyone who was willing and whose heart moved them came and brought an offering to the Lord for the work on the tent of meeting” (Exodus 35:21)
  • It led them into the promised land, but was stolen by The Philistines for 7 months
  • Returned to:
    1. Abinadab (Aaron's son)
    2. Obeid (David's grandfather)
    3. Bethlehem (David hometown)

  • The first structure in the tabernacle
    • “without the shedding of blood there is no forgiveness” (Hebrews 9:22)
  • Made of a fine wood and covered by bronze
  • A Symbol of Christ as a sacrifice without glory
  • Has four horns as a symbol of Jesus’ redemption of the whole world

  • It has 12 loaves/showbread, left for one week before the priests eat them on the 7th day and then replace them

  • Is composed of a central shaft and 3 branches on each side, (total of 7) filled with olive oil and candles

  1. A symbol of Jesus Christ: “I am the light of the world”
  2. Symbol of St. Mary: “The Mother of The True Light”
  3. Symbol of us: “You are the light of the world”
  4. The 7 branches are a symbol of The Church’s 7 Sacraments

  • Is located at the center of sanctuary and is opposite to the veil

  • Aaron burned incense 2 times a day – in the morning and the evening
  • The fire on this altar is taken from the bronze altar

Meditation:

  1. A symbol of Jesus Christ who offered Himself as an evening sweet incense and granted us redemption and joy
  2. A symbol of us “You are the sweet smell of Christ”

The Veil

  • Separates The Sanctuary and The Most Holy and blocks the entrance to The Most Holy
  • The curtains are made of 4 woven threads (blue, scarlet, purple and white)
  • Has a design of the cherubim on it to remind us of the cherubim at The Garden of Eden
  • The veil was torn when Jesus Christ was crucified
  • The New Testament: No veils in the church, Iconostases used to access The Holy of Holies
