Business Overview
Value Proposition
“What distinguishes Balzac’s Coffee Roasters from the rest, aside from unrivalled roast and formidable female leadership, is that every café is specifically designed to embody the cultural nuances and historical significance of the location it’s in. In doing so, each café has carved out a unique personality as a central gathering place for the locals to converse, share, ruminate and create. And the fact that all Balzac’s cafés have garnered quite the loyal following proves that providing a place for people to drink excellent coffee in the authentic French tradition has an appeal that can only be described as everlasting.”
In the words of novelist and playwright
Honoré de Balzac -
“the café is the people’s parliament.”
as presented on Balzac’s website
Branding
The Balzac’s brand has been described as an expression of Founder, Diana Olsen’s creative personal style - eclectic and original with an effusive connection to arts, culture and literature.
Ms. Olsen has spent considerable time in the cafés of France and fell in love with the French culture of coffee and the way it celebrated congregating and gathering.
“That was the goal with my cafés: to make everyone feel welcome, and where anybody and everybody feels part of something.”
Each café has it’s own unique allegorical poster art, designed from metaphoric symbols. The meaning is connected to the history and culture of the neighbourhood.
Illustrator,
Alayna Paquette has
designed unique poster
art for each café.
The elements of each
design are often only
known to the people in that particular neighbourhood and always contain a literary reference.

From the artistry of Kate Golding, British surface pattern artist and creator of ‘The Biggins Collection at Balzac’s’.
“I am just one of many individual talents who Diana has collaborated with, on different elements for Balzac’s Coffee Roasters. It is incredibly uplifting to see the brand grown in such a positive way, uniting so many people to create something special, coveted and unique. Balzac’s stands apart from the crowd for this reason.”
Noma Bar has designed multiple book covers for Margaret Atwood and now, for the Balzac’s Atwood Blend packaging. The Israeli artist is renowned for his negative space graphic style.
