Why is vocabulary so important for English learners?

Vocabulary is essential to understanding a text.

Numerous studies show that direct vocabulary instruction improves achievement.

According to the IES Practice Guide, it is one of four key recommendations for improving instruction for ELs.

“Teaching vocabulary might be one of the most underused instructional activities in K-12 education” (Marzano, 2001).
