The traditional day is
October 12th, the day
that Columbus arrived.

Who Was Christopher Columbus?
He was born in Genoa, Italy in October 31, 1451.
He was an adventurous child
who enjoyed sailing and reading
and as a teenager he began
exploring the world around him.
He moved from Italy to Portugal.
Columbus wanted to travel to the East Indies to bring spices back to Europe. He believed that
instead of traveling east, across
land, to get to the East Indies,
there was an easier route
traveling west, across the
ocean. He wanted to prove to
the many people who doubted him, that he was right.
King Ferdinand and Queen Isabella of Spain agreed to pay for Columbus' exploration
because they were hopeful
that Columbus would
spread their faith of the
Catholic religion around
the world.
