VISION and Mission

The key purpose of K-12 education is to ensure all students receive rigorous instruction, learn at high levels and demonstrate their learning in a range of exciting and new ways. The purpose of the Department of Black Student Achievement is to address the achievement gaps of black students in CUSD.

Through the creation of targeted interventions, progress monitoring, Mentorship, enrichment, professional development and social emotional support we will ensure our students Meet the acme of their potential and thrive at Compton Unified School District and Beyond.

This year we will tap into our Black students’ potential and change their educational trajectory.

Why is There a Need To Create Interventions for Black Students?

*Black students make of less than 20% of CUSD student population, yet they make up over 25% of The SpEd student population

TIER 1: PREPARING THE SOIL

TIER 2: PLANTING THE SEEDS

Embedded Tier 2 Intervention during Math & English classes

teachers attended professional development and learned how to effectively embed Intervention in Math & English block periods in the Fall (July, Ongoing)

Project REACH, Project RISE Tutors and Intervention Specialists Will Provide In Class Support to Underperforming Black Students

Project REACH and Project RISE Tutors will support underperforming black students in class to scaffold instruction (September)

TIER 3: WATERING

​

​

• Targeted Intervention will be assigned to all black students Who performed below grade-level on last year’s screener (iReady assessment) (September) Periodic reassessments will permit movement for those students who no longer need intervention.
• Targeted Intervention Classes will begin in September at all Schools (Before School, After School and / or Saturday School) (September)

​

• Monthly Progress Monitoring of students’ success in intervention classes will be Embedded in the Intervention Process (Principals’ monthly Data Chats) (September)

​

• At the end of 2022 All Underperforming Black students will be enrolled in Summer School Intervention & Enrichment to address their needs (June)

​

• Students will be issued chromebooks and a flier of all 24 hour Math and English learning platforms and recommended use time for the purpose of learning extension (iReady, Dreambox, Carnegie Learning, Khan Academy, Edgenuity, etc.) Principals will incentivize the at home use of 24 hour learning platforms to encourage widespread student use that positively impacts student achievement (August)

• Weekly Spotlight of Black STEAM Leaders for students sample (August)
• Ongoing Professional development to Support BSA (August, monthly)
• Individual BSA School Plans: to track and address attendance, grades, suspension, expulsion, Social Emotional Learning, site mentorship, intentional recruitment of black students for CTE, STEAM and rigorous courses, incentives, parent engagement and effective advertisement of offerings to engage parents and students. (August)

TIER 5: PRUNING

• K-12 BSA Counselor Meetings (September)

Three (3) meetings per student per year

One (1) additional group meeting with a M/S or H/S counselor for transition grades 5 & 8

*Intern Counselors will service the Elementary Schools

• Social Emotional Learning (August)

embedded in the school day to promote whole child emotional wellness (Dr. Ajala & Mrs. Bond)

• When Tiers One (1) through five (5) are implemented with fidelity an increase in Black Student Achievement, wellness, self confidence and success will be Fully realized

• The Black Student Achievement Conference will feature interactive workshops, extension classes, guest speakers, prominent figures, entertainment, HBCU workshops, BSA awards, prizes, games and a celebration of Black Excellence!
