What is a priest?

What was their function in early Israel?

Do these functions still apply today?

At the end of the day, the detail given to the garments of the priest, their ordination, and for that matter, the tabernacle that he was to oversee speaks to the centrality of worship for the people of God to be the people of God in a broken, chaotic world.

What is a priest, �and what was his function?

The priest was to lead and prepare people to meet their God in worship

The priests were representative of the people before God

How did we get from the Levitical priesthood to the priesthood of all believers, and did the function change in the process?

Hebrews 9:11-14

But when Christ came as high priest... he entered once for all into the holy place, not with the blood of goats and calves but with his own blood, thus obtaining eternal redemption. For if the blood of goats and bulls and the sprinkling of the ashes of a heifer sanctifies those who have been defiled so that their flesh is purified, how much more will the blood of Christ, who through the eternal Spirit, offered himself without blemish to God, purify our conscience from dead works to worship the living God!

Before all the bells, smells, and blood that were instituted in the Levitical priesthood, Melchizedek functioned unencumbered as a priest of God Most High to bless Abraham

Jesus is the eternal high priest, according to the order of Melchizedek

1 Peter 2:9-10

But you are a chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, God’s own people,^[a] in order that you may proclaim the excellence of him who called you out of darkness into his marvelous light.

In the priesthood of all believers scenario, the priest no longer has to be set apart and elevated, because we're all set apart and elevated and called to bear witness to Christ's redemption for the world, even as we also need Christ's redemption for ourselves.

The priesthood of all believers, which everyone dressed indistinguishably from one another represents, is where worship and mission meet!
