Moving to Iceland

School

• Sauðárkrókur has two kindergartens
• A primary school
• A comprehensive high school
• The primary and comprehensive school are in the center of town
• The main preschool is located south of the supermarket
• Important information for immigrants is that you have to pay for the kindergarten but the admission to the primary school is free

Supermarkets/grocery stores

• Skagfirðingabúð is the main store in Sauðárkrókur,but there is another smaller store named Hlíðarkaup
• There are two gas stations named N1 and Bláfell
• This store below in the picture is Skagfirðingabúð

Leisure

• There is a Leisure Center where most of the kids in 8th,9th and 10th grades meet up and do fun things together.
• The name of our Leisure Center is Hús Frítimans
• There is also a rescue team recruiting called “Trölli” where teenagers over the age of 14 can join to train to be a part of team later on

Weather/Travel conditions

• In Iceland it is very important to check weather and road conditions regularly to see if roads are accessible

Health care

• Our health care is great.. From the ages 0 - 18 health care is basically free
• Although Dental care is of kind of expensive

• Apartments in Iceland can be very expensive and hard to get but it all depends on how big it is or if its an apartment building

• To get a job you need you’re national security number
• And you can also get help from https://www.vinnumalastofnun.is and receive offices to keep tabs on you’re pensions, taxes and help you get a job

Hollidays/traditions

In Iceland we have a lot of holidays and traditions which are important for social inclusion, Some of which are Þorrablót, Öskudagur, Þorláksmessa, Föstudagurinn langi, menningarnótt and þrettándinn.

Language

• Our country’s primary anguage is icelandic
• Our secondary language is English
• But schools also teach Danish and every student is obliged to learn it

And here are a few words that do not resemble each other at all in Icelandic and English

1. Fidget spinner=Þyrilsnælda
2. Computer = Tölva
3. Boot = stígvél
4. Television=sjónvarp

Currency

Our currency is called “króna” and it consists of a 500, 1000, 2000, 5000 and a 10000 króna bill.

And our coins consist of a 1, 5, 10, 50 and a 100 króna coin

Other information

In Iceland there are so many beautiful things to see including the amazing norhtern lights, if you have ever seen the northern lights you know what we are talking about but if you haven’t then you’ll just have to come and visit. And if you ever do visit you must try some “Þorramat” we highly recommend it.
