What is the DNA barcoding project?

Purpose of this project

  • We will be using DNA barcoding to identify plants on B-CC school grounds.
  • You all will essentially be taking an inventory of the schools grounds to determine if there are invasive species present.
  • You will be taking a sample of a suspected invasive species, extracting the DNA, and sending it to a lab to barcode the species.
  • This data will then be compared to all other Montgomery County Public High Schools for analysis of trends.

Why is this important?

  • Identifying organisms has grown in importance as humans monitor the biological effects of global climate change and attempt to preserve species diversity in the face of accelerating habitat destruction.

  • But invasive species can harm the preservation of species diversity and can be detrimental to the success of a habitat

Okay…but what is an invasive species?

  • We will be learning more about invasive species in the second semester, but here is some basic info:
    • Invasive species are organisms that are accidentally brought into a community where they then flourish and take away resources that the native inhabitant organisms use
    • Invasive species slowly eliminate the native species, contributing to and accelerating the destruction of habitats
    • Invasive species can be parasitic, predatory, or indirectly harmful as plants or animals
