ISAM Overview

For our project, we are participating in the COSMIC Space Consortium In-Space Servicing, Assembly, and Manufacturing (ISAM) design challenge. As a part of the challenge, we MUST create a design that can perform three continual ISAM actions.Examples of ISAM:-Assembling a satellite in space-Manufacturing fiber optics-Repairing satellites in orbit

Moog Tug Satellite

Multiple payload deployments at once. The design is intended to maximize how many crafts can be sent with one launch. Highly efficient but costly launch price. Limited production testing.

Clear Space Servicing

Robotic arms are designed to capture and destroy space debris—an expensive option. The craft is a significant launch payload and must scale to meet varying sizes of trash.

OSAM-1

Designed to locate and rehabilitate spacecraft and satellites. NASAs idea for ISAM. Cost 2 billion dollars in research. The idea was scrapped in early 2024.

What can we takeaway from our research?

7 of 9

Takeaways

    • ISAM is a new and expensive field of design
    • Organizations in the past have developed ISAM capabilities, but industry standards and expectations for ISAM products are still in development.
    • We have the opportunity to create designs and solutions that are truly unique

Our Ideas

  • Focus on the removal of in-space debris
    • Instead of robotic arms, what if we can influence the orbit of debris with lasers?
  • Create a design that prioritizes in-space refueling
  • Consider remote control drone opportunities
