How do plants survive such different climates?

OPTIONAL REVIEW:

Plants don’t choose where they live. They can’t get up and move to a new location with a preferred habitat. Where a seed lands depends on the location of its parent plant, how it disperses (moves), and chance. If conditions are good for a seed, it will germinate and grow. If the plant has the right characteristics to survive in that environment, the plant will grow. If not, it won’t. In other words, plants live where their adaptations permit them to, and they can only survive in a particular climate.

Adaptations are structures or functions that help a plant or animal survive in their environment. For example, when we say that cacti are adapted to deserts, what we mean is they have the right structures to allow them to survive the hot temperature and low moisture of the desert. For instance, they store water in their stems, and they have large networks of shallow roots to soak up rain quickly.
