Rules of the Road

  1. We want to hear from every person in the room - please say your name when I call on you
  2. Please think of how much less school would suck if even one of our plans was true in your high school
  3. Challenge - ask one question that comes to you which you would otherwise not ask

Problem - The Issue with School By the Numbers

Put graphs that tell the story of the issues with traditional schooling associated with children being forced to study material that doesn’t interest them, school inherently being a one size fits all model, and the fatal flaws of striving for a universally designed lesson.

Action - What are we going to do?

  • We believe the biggest issues with schools today come from
    • Children being forced to study material that doesn’t interest them
    • School inherently is one size fits all
    • Despite woke rhetoric teachers CANNOT actually build a universally designed lesson.
  • As a result we want
    • Children to be free as inspired by A.S. Niell’s work at Summerhill
    • Students can learn best on their own
    • Teachers are tutors who teach ALL students how to analyze their own mistakes and learn from them

Action - How are we going to do it?

Resolution - What will happen as a result of our school?

  • As a result of our work, philosophy, structure, and daily practice:
    • Children can study what interests them and come back to the subjects that they do not currently want to study when the time is right.
    • Students can study at the pace that best serves them, with ongoing access to tutors for the subjects that they have the biggest gaps with.
    • Teachers can cater their instruction to the exact student in front of them in tutoring sessions and the knowledge that they impart will migrate as students work together naturally, which makes teaching to a class a model that is less necessary
