What is Virtual Desktop

Why need to sidequest Virtual Desktop

Virtual Desktop(VD) is an app for you to control your PC via Oculus Quest. For Bigscreen 2D games, 2D/3D video/movie/photo viewing(you will have to have those software install in your PC) And also for PCVR games. Sidequest game are installed and run on Quest, PCVR game are installed and run on PC, Virtual Desktop just makes Quest as a VR viewing and input device for your PC. So your PC will need to be VR ready for PCVR games. But any PC, even $100 chromebook can sidequest.

The Oculus Quest store version of Virtual Desktop does not have PCVR function due to “unknown” reasons. So you will need to sidequest to sideload the patch version of VD which supports PCVR. But you will have to purchase VD from Oculus Quest store(NOT RiftS/Steam store!) first before doing the patch.

First, you’ll need to be able to answer “Yes” for…...

1. Do you have a PC that meets the minimum requirements to run PCVR games from the Oculus Rift store or Steam store? (see this slide)

2. Is your computer connected to your router via ethernet cable? (see this slide)

3. Does your router have a 5Ghz connection? (see this slide) gen1 5Ghz will lag… on VD software, below 50ms is playable, below 30ms is good, consider upgrade your router or GPU if you are above 50ms latency

4. Will you be playing your Oculus Quest in the same room near your wireless router? (see slide 10)

In general, if you can answer yes to those questions, you should have no issues with performance playing PCVR games wirelessly via your Oculus Quest.

Keep in mind that Virtual Desktop(VD) is not perfect. Some have experienced stutter/lag depends on their setup/condition. Also, there are many variables that could cause you to have issues with VD or your headset but in general, it's pretty straight forward.

And here is a list of supported and un-supported games via VD

Steps to use Oculus Quest with VD (2/2)

10. Go through the settings which should be to enter the username on the VR Desktop Streamer and then you should be able to connect!

11. Once you get everything to connect correctly, you will have a "Games" tab of the left sidebar of the VD app in the Quest(click menu button on your left controller) and that will show you all your Oculus Rift/SteamVR PCVR installed games.

12. If you are having error for missing headset/controller, you can uninstall SteamVR environment and re-install, then restart both PC and Quest few times. Reinstalling steam vr won't delete your games in steam library. https://www.vrheads.com/how-fix-steamvr-startup-issues

13. Any more issues, please go to Virtual Desktop Discord and ask for further help

SideQuest Guide (Or watch this:https://youtu.be/reH55tb9w84)

1. Create an Oculus Developer account here: https://dashboard.oculus.com/ (It can be called anything)

2. Enable developer mode via your mobile device. Connect your Quest to your phone using the quest app and turn on developer mode

3. Download the ADB drivers here: https://developer.oculus.com/downloads/package/oculus-adb-drivers/

4. Extract the files from the ADB driver download. Then find and right-click "android-winusb.inf" and click "install"

5. Connect your Oculus Quest to your computer via USB-C to USB-C or a USB-C to USB-A cable. Just be sure to use a USB 3.0 port.

6. Put the Oculus Quest on and you should see a message that says "Allow USB debugging" and check the "Always allow" then "Ok"

7. Download and install Side Quest to your computer: https://sidequestvr.com/#/download

PC Hardware Requirement (following HL:A)

*Please note VD/Link require more GPU power to Encode video into Quest. Quest doen’t directly take in HDMI/DVI signal like other PCVR devices.

OS: Windows 10Processor: Core i5-7500 / Ryzen 5 1600Memory: 12 GB RAMGraphics: GTX 1060 / RX 580 - 6GB VRAM

For Mac/Linux Users

  • First, Mac is still a PC, it is x86
  • Virtual Desktop currently doesn’t support OSX(Mac) or Linux
  • OSX can use Parallel Desktop or Bootcamp to run Virtual Desktop streamer, SteamVR and OculusVR.
  • Linux user you should knew what to do, you are not as dumb as…
  • OSX still can sidequest, here is a tutorial: https://youtu.be/xKUvK2Pmv8o
  • Even if you Parallel Desktop or Bootcamp, you need to make sure your Mac is up to requirement specs. Most Macbook pro is not powerful enough for VR.Some have good enough CPU, but GPU is always bad. You have two options
    • Buy external gpu box(about USD$200-300, without GPU) + a GPU(1650super $180)
    • Build a budget desktop with 1650super $500

Network Map Required for minimize latency

*Make sure your route is in one of the situations in the chart on the left (I am on D, avg. latency below 25ms on desktop 40ms on VR)*Make sure your router/mesh unit and Quest are in the same room, 5Ghz cannot pass through wall due to its physical limits. Recommend to use Wifi6 Routers. Wifi6 Routers starting from USD$79 without mesh function and $100 with mesh function.*Also when wifi mesh, route it around walls, 5Ghz cannot pass through walls

Why Wifi 6 router

Since Wifi 6 came out, a lot of the old gen mid/high-end router are on great discount, but it is not worth it to buy them.

Some companies cheap out on parts, so they might be able to do the top speed they said they can, but don’t promise the latency.

Internet Speed ≠ Router Speed ≠ Router Latency

Wifi 6 standard ensures you are getting enough hardware for VD use. From personal experience and observations, you will need a router with at least tri/quad core 750mhz or above and 128MB Ram or above. In theory any Wifi6 router will be able to do that, no more hard time on search and comparing router specs.

11

*Netgear Nighthawk AX4 4-Stream WiFi 6 Router (RAX40)

Only have dual-core, but some say it is good enough for VD already

If you have Quest2,

Go for wifi6 160mhz router

#Please avoid Tp-Link AX1500 or other Tp-Link AX routers. It is a known issue their firmware/hardware causes stutter issues (eg.here)

PS. My personal suggestion is ASUS RT-AX56U or AX3000

My Setup for Quest1

My Setup for Quest2

My setup was Ryzen1600+32GB+1060-6GB in bedroom, cat6 to ASUS asus RT-AX56U, then wifi mesh to ASUS Lyra Trio in living room over separated 5Ghz SSID (only Quest and chromecast are using this SSID, other 5Ghz device are on a different 5Ghz SSID.) Butter smooth gaming for most VR games, only a very small amount of game are not supported by Virtual Desktop(VD), and the list is reducing by time via updates. My latency is only around 22-28ms according to the VD UI. Tested on v1.14 again, avg. below 25ms on desktop mode and below 40ms on VR mode, still butter smooth.

My setup is Ryzen3600X+32GB+3060Ti in bedroom, same network setup as above. I am still testing out the max setting limit of my 3060Ti, latency will be update soon.

[Not VD related] to solve horrible tracking of controllers

  • Don't use any controller protector that covers the ring
  • Cover up the mirror/glass/reflective surface with cloth/paper in your play area
  • Make sure your room have enough light, or get an IR LED Illuminator
  • Remove YUR Fit <- some user reports some version of this mess up with tracking of some version of quest
