Class Modalities

Students may choose to take their classes in a variety of modalities. Please discuss this with your counselor.

  • In-person on any of our three campuses:
    • Typically offered from 8 am to 9:20 am during 1st block.
  • Online
    • HGTC online classes are asynchronous, meaning they do not meet on a specific day/time. Students need to log in weekly to submit assignments, participate in discussion boards, view announcements and updates, and to complete quizzes and exams.
    • All online classes have required weekly assignments tied to attendance and must be completed to remain in the course.

Flexible scheduling allows students to take on-campus and/or online classes best suited to their high school class schedule. HGTC will reserve seats for our dual enrollment students in the frequently requested courses.Classes on campus are typically scheduled either on Monday/Wednesday (M/W) or Tuesday/Thursday (T/R) with no Friday classes. Arriving on time is important, as excessive tardies will be counted as an absence. Students must adhere to the professor’s and college’s policies regarding class attendance requirements. College level courses can be more challenging and will require additional work, so it is important to consider high school course loads for the fall and spring semesters when enrolling in dual enrollment.

Course Selections for Fall and/or Spring Semester

High school counselors will discuss course recommendations with students and parents. Counselors will submit course requests directly to HGTC. Students may enroll in both semesters or may choose one semester best suited to their sports participation and after-school activities.

It is the student’s responsibility to review their schedule in myHGTC before the start of classes and to let their counselor know of any changes that need to be made before the end of the add/drop period (5 days).

Note: HGTC will record course selections for both fall and spring to be confirmed by the counselor each semester. However, only one semester will be viewable at a time in the student’s myHGTC account. In addition, HGTC does not provide interim grades. Only numeric final grades will be entered in PowerSchool.

Accessibility and Disability Services

    • There is a different process at the collegiate level versus high school level for students with an IEP or 504 Plan.
    • To access services and accommodations, students must first self-identify, obtain documentation of the disability, and make an appointment with an appropriate staff member. This can be done via the online Accommodations Intake Form.
    • Note: Accommodations will not be applied retroactively, so it is imperative that students request to renew their accommodations at the beginning of each semester.

Horry County Schools Dual Enrollment Guidelines

Counselors will provide students a copy of The HCS Dual Enrollment Guidelines along with its Student Commitment Form outlining the district’s prerequisites for course approval, i.e., ENG 101, MAT 120, SPA 101, etc. Generally, HCS will not pay for English, math, history, or science classes due to AP offerings at the high school unless a student has taken all the available options. Typically, students will be responsible for tuition and textbook costs for the core academic courses.

However, HCS will pay for tuition and provide a textbook for PACE courses which do not have an AP offering at the high school. Students must earn a “C” or higher in these courses or must otherwise reimburse the district for their costs. Students withdrawn from these courses resulting in a “WF” (50 Average) on the high school transcript required by the SCDE Uniform Grading Policy must also reimburse the district. HCS will not pay for future classes for these students.
