  • It originates in Levočské mountains below the village named Škapová, about 5 km northwest of Torysa village
  • It flows through towns Lipany, Sabinov, Veľký Šariš and Prešov
  • With its length of 129 km, it is an important left-hand tributary of the river Hornád.

  • The Torysa river is characterized by a difficult access to water, the banks are mostly densely overgrown and quite steep. The flow is full of meanders and turns, which are a characteristic sign of Torysa.
  • The riverbed is narrow and faster flowing sections very often alternate with quieter and deeper sections. The riverbed is regulated and clear only in Prešov.

There are many rumors about the Torysa river and here is one of them....

Gold near the Torysa or how the fisherman Šupina caught a goldfish

  • Somewhere near the Torysa, a long time ago, the fisherman Šupina was not very lucky with his catches. The others made him feel it. They mocked him in the pub and gossiped about him.
  • One evening a hermit took pity on him and told him a story about a fish he had never heard before. He only has to cast a rod at midnight. The fisherman did exactly what he was advised to do and it paid of.
  • He caught a beautiful goldfish that begged for his life.

He agreed but he didn‘t want the fish to escape.

He dug a hole in the ground with his bare hands,

where he poured water in and put the fish there.

  • He stopped in the pub, where he showed off his catch. Those who mocked him, went with him to the river. But there was nothing left in the water in the small dam. The fisherman Šupina, ashamed, went to another region.
  • It is said that from that moment on, people around the Torysa found some kind of fish scales, but they were made of gold. So when you walk along its shores, try to increase your attention. Maybe it will work out and you will also take home a piece of gold.

Traditions

  • In Slovakia we have spring tradition called Welcoming spring or Morena.
  • Morena is big doll from materials like straw, old scarves, blankets...
  • The people of Prešov welcome spring by throwing a burning Morena into the waters of Torysa. Boaters will unlock the spring waters and set out in kayaks for their first sail of the year towards village Haniska. The event has a 66-year-old tradition in Prešov.
