BHEL is engaged in the design, engineering, manufacturing, construction, testing, commissioning, and servicing of a wide range of products and services for the core sectors of the economy, including power, transmission, industry, transportation (railways), renewable energy, oil & gas, and defense.

BHEL, one of India's largest engineering and manufacturing enterprises, operates through 16 manufacturing divisions, two repair units, four regional offices, eight service centers, eight overseas offices, and 15 regional marketing centers. The company focuses on power generation, transmission, transportation, renewable energy, and industrial solutions. The foundation of BHEL's growth story can be traced back to the early 2000s when the company made structural changes, internalizing 'power plant equipment manufacturing' as its core competence rather than 'construction.'
