We can explain/justify all of the trends using the Force of Attraction (FA).

1) Use increase in Force of Attraction (FA) (remember more protons and electrons (opposite charges) leads to a larger attractive force) to justify trends across a period.

2) Use decrease in Force of Attraction (FA) (remember more energy levels leads to a larger distance between the nucleus and electrons which leads to a smaller attractive force) to justify trends moving down a group.

Periodic Trends

  1. Explain what happens to the Force of Attraction (FA) as you move across a period (left to right) and/or down a group and why this happens.

  • Explain how an increased or decreased Force of Attraction (FA) affects the property you are justifying/explaining.

  • While you are explaining #2 make sure to describe the property as well.
